‘How do you injure yourself?!’ - Fans ridicule Man Utd record-breaker’s first touch vs Southampton

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku made headlines for the wrong reasons despite ending a lengthy goal drought in their 2-2 draw at Southampton.

The 25-year-old registered his first goal in 78 days but the game would unfortunately be remembered for how it ended for the Belgian marksman.

Famine over for Lukaku. Five things you need to know…

  1. Lukaku joined Manchester United from Everton in the summer of 2017 and finished his first season with 27 goals across 51 matches in all competitions.
  2. He’d start the 2019 campaign having registered four goals across his opening five Premier League outings.
  3. However the former Chelsea centre-forward would endure a run of seven league matches without bagging a goal before striking against The Saints.
  4. That drought extended into the Champions League with Lukaku failing to score in any of his four appearances.
  5. Lukaku hasn’t scored at Old Trafford this season with his last goal at The Theatre of Dreams coming in United’s 2-0 win over Swansea City in March 2018.

In many ways his appearance in today’s lineup is somewhat of a personal victory as Lukaku not long ago was dropped by United boss Jose Mourinho following a string of indifference performances.

Seen by some as bulletproof, and one of Mourinho’s favourite, the decision to leave him out of United’s recent teams reinvigorated him and Lukaku oft criticised for having a poor first touch explained it’s one area of his game he’s working daily to improve.

“Yeah, you improve on it every day,” he said. “It’s something that you have to work on every day.”

Lukaku’s ‘first touch’ strikes again

On the basis of this latest outing Lukaku isn’t working hard enough.

United lost further ground on their rivals in the process mounting even more pressure on manager Jose Mourinho and though it ended 2-2, and United dropping two more points, it’s fair to say Mourinho’s men snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat having found themselves two goals down after 20 minutes played.

Lukaku played a role in their comeback; halving the deficit – in the process becoming the most prolific opposition player at St. Mary’s (five goals) – before Ander Herrera drew both teams level. As the game winded down with the scoreling reading 2-2, after the Red Devils managed to come from two goals down, Lukaku went to ground inconspicuously.

On further look it seemed he slipped attempting to control a ball hurriedly played to him from United’s penalty area. Kevin Friend, the match official, concerned with Lukaku brought the game to a halt before he exited stage left.

It was an embarrassing moment and one that didn’t help his image of being clumsy.
