Juventus 'could be a possibility' for Barcelona target

A Juventus move is a “possibility” for Ajax wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt, according to the player’s father.

De Ligt has established a reputation as one of the best young defenders in world football since making his Ajax debut in 2016 and already has 13 caps to his name with the Dutch national team.

De Ligt to Juventus? Five key things to know…

  1. Matthijs de Ligt made his senior Ajax debut in 2016 in a 5-0 win over Willem II.
  2. He has since helped the club reach the 2017 Europa League final and is regarded as one of the best young defenders in the game, recently winning Tuttosport’s ‘Golden Boy’ award.
  3. The 19-year-old already has 13 caps for Holland and has been linked with some huge clubs, including Barcelona.
  4. De Ligt’s father, Frank, has added Juventus into the mix, saying Turin is a “beautiful city”.
  5. The defender is contracted to Ajax until 2021, with Frank saying he and Mino Raiola will decide his future soon.

De Ligt helped Ajax reach the 2017 Europa League final, and his form over the past two years has led to the 19-year-old being linked to some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Barcelona being one of the most touted destinations.

But De Ligt’s father, Frank, has now added Juventus to the mix, admitting the Old Lady “could be a possibility” for his son.

“Juve could be a possibility, but they’re not the only team interested,” Frank de Ligt told Tuttosport (via Football Italia).

“Now we’re focusing on this season with Ajax. Turin is a beautiful city, I came here for the Netherlands match in June too.”

Frank de Ligt also said that he and agent Mino Raiola will be working hard over the next few months to make the best decision for the defender’s future.

He added: “In the next few months, I, my son, and [agent Mino] Raiola will make the best decision for his future.”

Where would De Ligt fit in at Juventus?

At just 19 years of age, it is still early days for Matthijs de Ligt, but the Dutch youngster has shown a great deal of promise so far.

If De Ligt was to make a move to Juventus, he would certainly be in good company at centre-half; Juve currently have three of the most renowned central defenders of the modern game at the club in Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli.

In Bonucci especially, the Old Lady have one of the most adept ball-playing defenders in the game at the moment and playing alongside the Italian would do De Ligt’s development no harm at all.
