La Liga stopper named Squawka's best No.1 in Europe

Who doesn’t love Christmas?

It may just be the most wonderful time of the year – except when there’s a World Cup on, of course. Though some have been preparing for the day since the end of October, the true countdown begins once December gets underway and the advent calendars can be raided.

And why not include Squawka in your countdown to Christmas?

Squawka is building a combined 25-man based on shirt numbers, revealing one player every day from 1st December right up till 25th.

Let’s start with No.1: Who is the best No.1 in Europe right now?

Here’s our top three:

3. Hugo Lloris (Tottenham/France)

What makes him special? A World Cup winning goalkeeper, Lloris’ game time has been slightly limited due to injury but the Frenchman has proven his worth when on the pitch for Spurs.

Key stat: Hugo Lloris has averaged 5.34 saves per goal conceded in the Premier League this season.

2. David de Gea (Manchester United/Spain)

What makes him special? David de Gea hasn’t had the best start to the season, by his own high standards, but the goalkeeper remains one of the best in the world and shows his importance to United every game.

Key stat: David de Gea has made 48 saves in the Premier League this season, more than any goalkeeper in the top half of the table.

1. Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona/Germany)

What makes him special? Ter Stegen may not be Germany’s number one goalkeeper – for whatever reason – but the Barcelona number one is continuously proving himself to be one of the best in the world, and in this case, the best No. 1.

Key stat: Marc-Andre ter Stegen has averaged 2.62 saves per game in La Liga this season.

Honourable mentions

Remarkably, some of the best goalkeepers aren’t No. 1s for their club, but those who are and didn’t make the top three include: Jordan Pickford (Everton/England), Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea/Spain), Keylor Navas (Real Madrid/Costa Rica), Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich/Germany), Roman Burki (Borussia Dortmund/Switzerland), Samir Handanovic (Inter Milan/Slovakia), Wojciech Szczesny (Juventus/Poland), Anthony Lopes (Lyon/Portugal), Danijel Subasic (Monaco/Croatia) and Gianluigi Buffon (PSG/Italy).
