Will Chelsea become the first transfer victims of the post-Sancho market?

Bayern Munich’s sporting director has publicly stated the club have a “great interest” in Callum Hudson-Odoi amid reports the Chelsea winger has been the subject of mutiple transfer bids.

Hudson-Odoi is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young prospects in European football and has attracted the interest of top European clubs. Bayern have now confirmed they are among those.

Will Hudson-Odoi leave Chelsea? Five things to know…

  1. Hudson-Odoi is tipped to become “world-class” by Cesc Fabregas.
  2. He started the FA Cup Community Shield defeat to Manchester City but has just one substitute appearance in the league.
  3. The Englishman has just 18 months left on his current contract.
  4. The Blues, who value him at £35m, have turned down repeated offers for Hudson-Odoi from Bayern.
  5. The player himself has reportedly told Chelsea he wants to leave this month.

Hudson-Odoi is frustrated with the lack of first-team opportunities that have been presented to him this season according to the Guardian and has told Chelsea he wishes to leave.

This discontent has seen Bayern table multiple offers for the pacey winger. The latest is widely reported to have met Chelsea’s £35m valuation, and Bayern’s sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, has confirmed the reigning Bundesliga champions have a “great interest” in Hudson-Odoi.

“All I can say about Callum Hudson-Odoi is that I think he’s a good player and he’s a player who we have a great interest in,” Salihamidzic said, according to Sky Sports, on Wednesday.

“In my opinion, he’s a player who would fit in well at our club. He’s got unbelievable qualities.

“He’s good at dribbling and has pace. In my opinion, he’s a player we would definitely like to have. Let’s see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri still believes Hudson-Odoi’s future remains at Stamford Bridge.

When Sarri was asked if Hudson-Odoi should move to the current Bundesliga champions, he said: “I don’t think so. Why? Because he is an English player, very young. He has a very great future here, with the England national team and Chelsea. To stay here is better for him.

“Have I spoken to him about this? No because I am not in charge of these questions and don’t want to speak to a player on something that doesn’t depend on me.

“Am I happy with that? Yes, I want to speak to him only about the pitch, about movements, the defensive phase and I am really very happy because he is improving that in a very important way in the last month.”

Chelsea to fall victim to the post-Sancho market?

Hudson-Odoi is having to sit on the sidelines while the likes of Jadon Sancho shine at Borussia Dortmund and establish themselves not only as players full of potential, but as creditable first-team stars.

At Chelsea, Hudson-Odoi is naturally behind world-class talent Eden Hazard, with Willian and Pedro both preferred over the young Englishman on the right wing.

There is also Chelsea’s £58m deal for Christian Pulisic to consider. The US international arrives from Dortmund this summer, so you can understand the predicament Hudson-Odoi is in.

That he has a bright future is not in question. It’s more about where that future will be. Sarri has expressed his faith in the player but also made it clear that he is not one calling the shots in transfer related matters.

The simple fact remains that by showing other English talents there are first-team minutes on offer in the Bundesliga, former Manchester City academy star Sancho has changed the game. Chelsea are no strangers to offloading potential world-beaters, but the west Londoners club could become the first victim of the post-Sancho market.
