Chelsea star rejects Sarri claim

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard has rejected the claim levelled at him by Maurizio Sarri that “he’s not a leader”.

The Belgian helped his side beat Spurs on Thursday evening in the Carabao Cup on penalties, after the game was tied at 2-2 on aggregate.

Why did Sarri critique Hazard? Four things to know about the manager’s recent public statements

  1. Sarri has claimed to have become disillusioned with his squad following a succession of spotty results.
  2. Most recently, after suffering a 2-0 loss at Arsenal, he said his players were “extremely difficult to motivate”.
  3. Prior to Thursday night’s game, the manager said Hazard is “not a leader”.
  4. The message comes while Hazard is thought to weighing up his options over a new contract.

The Belgian was asked after the match whether he felt like a leader, he responded, via Goal: “I always say that on the pitch I’m a leader. I think I am a leader.”

“My job on the pitch is to just do what I can do so I am happy,” he stated. “We have two days now to recover for Sunday which is also a tough game,” Hazard said, as he looks ahead to a FA Cup fourth-round tie against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

“The boys deserve today,” he continued. “We played the best game and we deserve it.”

Chelsea now face Man City in the Carabao Cup final on February 24, where City, who won the title last year, will be favourites.

Hazard responds well to criticism

The Belgian scored against Spurs in the first half to help his Chelsea side ease ahead to a 2-0 lead on Thursday night.

However, he also took four shots, attempted four dribbles and enjoyed a pass accuracy of 85%.

More importantly, Hazard was played in his favoured left-wing position, off frontman Olivier Giroud, and flourished.

Sarri will likely play the Belgian on the wing from now on especially after the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain, who made the loan switch to the Blues this week and will likely be the main No.9 for the second half of the season.
