Key winners & losers as Derby knock 10-man Accrington out of FA Cup

Derby County come alive late on to snatch a 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

Accrington put on a good show at the Wham Stadium, even after going down to ten men in the second half, and they can be proud of their efforts against a strong Championship side.

However, they eventually succumbed to Derby’s advances when Martyn Waghorn grabbed a poachers goal from close range.

Here are three winers and three losers from Saturday’s fourth-round clash.

Winners 

John Coleman

Stanley started this match with three at the back, indicating that the League One outfit were preparing to approach this game with their backs against the wall. Coleman’s formation is another reason why one should never judge a book by its cover, as Accrington played on the front foot from the first whistle to the last this afternoon.

Credit must go to the manager for having the courage to go and attack an in-form Championship side. Wing-backs Callum Johnson and Janoi Donacien raced up the pitch causing Derby many problems on the flanks while Stanley’s midfielder’s first thought was to go forward in this game. This remained the case even after going down to ten men in the second half.

Even though his side were defeated today Coleman deserves a lot of credit for how he approached this game.

Mason Bennet

Bennet replaced Mason Mount in the first half after the Derby midfielder, on loan from Chelsea, pick up a knock before half time. Bennet did wonderfully in his stead with positive attacking play and was successful at exploding space on the left flank.

His efforts on the left paid off when he set up Martyn Waghorn on 78 minutes. Bennet’s snaking run into the box opened up Stanley’s defences and he was able to cut back a pass in to the box where Waghorn was on hand to snatch a scrappy effort from six-yards out.

Janoi Donacien

The 25-year-old  Saint Lucian worked tirelessly at left-back this afternoon. He was central to Stanley’s attacks down the left flank and he opened up Derby with some surging runs, neat flicks and touches. The full-back’s performance going forward was not at the expense of his defensive duties as he worked just as hard going backwards as he did forwards. The full-back pretty much neutralised any threats Derby had on the right flank with a solid display. Although Donacien never created anything of critical significance for his side, he can be proud of his efforts this afternoon.

Losers

Mason Mount

The Chelsea loanee has had a promising season with Derby under the tutelage of Frank Lampard and is developing into an exciting prospect for England as well as his parent club in thePremier League.

The had some bright ideas in the first half of this one, but he never managed to get the better of Stanley’s defences and had to withdraw before the break after picking up a knock. Derby fans will be hoping that his substitution was merely a precautionary measure as the youngster has been integral to the club this term.

Daniel Barlaser

The 22-year-old midfielder, on loan from Newcastle United, was well up for this tie and was in the thick of the action throughout. Barlaser was solid defensively, he didn’t give Derby’s attackers much time to breath and he was a positive force going forward showing an excellent range of passing.

His highlight of the first half came when he delivered a sweet pass into the path of Sean McConville on the right wing. The 29-year-old delivered a wicked cross towards Jordan Clark who should have done better while unmarked at close range – his poorly controlled shot fizzed high and wide.

Barlaser started the second half brightly with some lovely passing, but moments after creating a great chance he ruined his positive afternoon when he got sent off after receiving his second yellow for a reckless challenge in the middle of the park. A camera in Accrington’s dressing room showed a distraught Barlaser being comforted by coaching staff. Such a shame.

Jayden Bogle

The 18-year-old defender ruined a solid performance in central defence when he earned a red card for a professional foul on Paul Smyth in the last minute of normal time. One could look at Bogle’s challenge as a good decision to make as Smyth was through on goal and could have forced a replay if he found the net. Also, Bogle managed to foul Smyth before he made it into the penalty area, only conceding a fee-kick as a result. But the youngster will miss out on on Derby’s fifth-round tie  and will provide his manager with a headache regarding team selection.
