Manchester United are going to see “the best” of Alexis Sanchez in 2019, according to Ander Herrera.
Sanchez will go back to the Emirates in the FA Cup on Friday night for the first time since leaving Arsenal for Manchester United last January.
Why hasn’t Sanchez shone for Man Utd yet? Five key things to know…
- Sanchez joined United from Arsenal in last January’s transfer window as part of a swap deal for midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
- The Chilean was named Arsenal’s Player of the Season in his final full campaign in north London.
- But he has struggled to replicate his best form at Old Trafford, scoring just four goals in 32 appearances.
- Injuries and a reportedly strained relationship with former manager Jose Mourinho were believed to be the reasons behind Sanchez’s troubles.
- All of that said, Sanchez has created more chances per 90 (3.03) than any of this teammates in the Premier League this season.
Against Brighton in the Premier League last weekend, Sanchez was an unused substitute as United edged past the visitors with a 2-1 victory.
But the 30-year-old could return to the starting line-up against his former club, and Herrera believes Sanchez should begin to make an impact this year.
“He [Alexis] did amazing for them. He was the best player for them every single season he was there, so I think Arsenal fans will receive him in a good way, because he has been fantastic for them,” Herrera told United’s official website.
“He has given everything and now we have him. Now we want to enjoy him. His character makes him a really special player and I think we are going to see the best of Alexis in 2019.”
Where does Sanchez fit in at Man United?
The Red Devils have drastically improved since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over from Mourinho last month, but Sanchez is yet to turn his fortunes around.
The question is: where does Sanchez fit in to United’s starting line-up when fully fit?
Marcus Rashford has been playing more of a central role lately, meaning Sanchez could battle the likes Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku for one of the other attacking spots.
For Arsenal, Sanchez was at his best playing in the channel between left wing and centre forward. If Solskjaer can find a role for him there, Herrera’s prediction may come true.
