Phil Neville has hailed Paul Pogba as ‘brilliant’ for the role he played in Manchester United’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Arsenal on Friday.
The Red Devils used the counter-attack to ruthless effect to put the Gunners away and secure passage to the fifth round of the tournament.
Just how good were Man Utd and Pogba on Friday? Five key things to know…
- Man Utd beat Arsenal 3-1 on Friday night to secure passage to the FA Cup fifth-round.
- Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring, with Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial rounding off the goals.
- Romelu Lukaku grabbed two assists, but it was Paul Pogba who impressed Phil Neville the most.
- The Frenchman had a brilliant second half and his charge forward and shot on goal allowed Martial to score the rebound for Man Utd’s third.
- Former Man Utd man Neville hailed Pogba’s second-half display as ‘brilliant’.
The win also makes it eight out of eight for caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Neville highlighted Pogba as a key component to United’s gameplan on Friday.
“Paul Pogba was brilliant in the second half, that drive going forward, Arsenal didn’t have that,” Neville said in the BBC studio after the match. “I thought there was a gulf between the two teams tonight.”
Neville then praised the job being carried out by Solskjaer, stating the Norwegian has managed to get his side playing in a way Jose Mourinho could not.
“At the start people accused Ole of winning easy games, then he went to Tottenham and won,” he added. “The players that were not performing under Jose are now performing the way we knew they could.”
United face Burnley on Tuesday in the Premier League.
Shearer: United deserve to go through
Neville wasn’t the only pundit in the BBC studio to be impressed by United’s counter-attacking play, or the effect that Pogba had on that.
Former Newcastle and Blackburn striker, Alan Shearer, joined Neville in lavishing praise upon Solskjaer’s side, saying they were the ‘much better team’ and ‘deserved to go through’.
“Man United picked Arsenal off with ease in the second half, they were much the better team,” Shearer said.
“Arsenal fell into the trap and they offered very little. Arsenal lacked someone to pick the ball up and drive forward. They were trying to be nice and pretty but they didn’t have anyone like Paul Pogba who could drive forward with the ball.
“United had so many more options going forward than Arsenal. Arsenal had a lot of the ball but didn’t cause them any problems. United went forward at pace and they deserve to go through.”
