Match preview

For Spurs, this is a fixture that offers so much promise as long as they keep their cool to remain organisation and professionalism in what could be a hostile environment in Germany.

Three goals to the good against Dortmund was the best possible result they could realistically achieve in the first leg (4-0 would have just been greedy), but Mauricio Pochettino will know that although it looks good on paper, Spurs are far from qualified just yet.

Spurs are yet won a single game since their triumph over Dortmund last month, after all, having lost to both Burnley and Chelsea before just about hanging on to a score draw against arch-rivals Arsenal on Saturday.

Son Heung-min to set a personal record?

Luckily for Spurs, they don’t necessarily need to win this one. And Dortmund are not exactly in great form themselves.

Heung-min Son, who shined in Harry Kane’s recent absence, loves playing against them, too.

He has nine goals against the Bundesliga team, his best tally against any single opponent.

This means Dortmund could become the first team to conceded 10 goals against South Korea’s biggest footballing talent.

Can Sancho stop Dortmund’s season from falling apart?

Following their disappointing showing on English soil, Dortmund have drawn 0-0 with bottom-of-the-table Nurnberg, just about beaten Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 but lost to Augsburg 2-1 last Friday.

They have seen the monstrous double-digit lead over Bayern Munich cut down to zero points. Goal difference is all that is keeping Dortmund at the top of the table right now.

Hope lies in the shape of the incredibly talented Jadon Sancho. Should the former Manchester City youth player find the net, he will become the first English player to score against an English side for a non-British side in Champions League history.

Head-to-head

These are not regular foes, having only played each other five times in their history, all of which have come recently.

Spurs have won three Champions League clashes while Dortmund have seen their two victories take place in the Europa League.

Team news

Tottenham’s main fitness concern is the absence of Dele Alli, who is yet to return to action following his injury against Fulham in early 2019.

But otherwise, Pochettino should have a full squad to pick from tomorrow night.

For Dortmund, they should have both Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer back among their ranks following their respective thigh and shoulder injury.

Defenders Lukasz Piszczek and Marcel Schmelzer are both unlikely to feature against Spurs.

Dortmund predicted XI: Burki; Hakimi, Zagadou, Toprak, Diallo; Reus, Weigl, Witsel, Sancho, Gotze; Alcacer.

Spurs predicted XI: Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Sanchez, Davies; Sissoko, Dier, Eriksen; Son, Kane.

Squawka prediction

This is a crucial game for two sides in poor form.

Spurs can beat anyone on their day but an early Dortmund goal will shred nerves in north London.

Even if overturning Spurs’ three-goal lead looks unlikely, Dortmund have enough quality to restore some pride.

It’ll be close, but the BVB have just one clean sheet in eight and look as if they lack the quality to prevent Spurs from scoring.

Dortmund 3-1 Tottenham
