Confirmed: Monchi quits Roma amid Arsenal links

AS Roma have confirmed sporting director Monchi has left the Italian club after the pair reached a mutual agreement.

The 50-year-old has been linked with becoming the new sporting director at Arsenal in the summer, after the Gunners parted ways with Sven Mislintat in February.

Will Monchi move to Arsenal? Five key things to know…

    1. Monchi made a name for himself as one of the best sporting directors in football during his spell at Sevilla.
    2. The Spaniard has not been able to replicate his effect with Roma, after joining the club in 2017.
    3. Despite this, Monchi has been linked with a move to Premier League side Arsenal in the summer.
    4. In the final days of his Roma spell, Monchi reportedly clashed with fans, adding to the speculation over his future.
    5. And Monchi’s path to the Emirates has now been cleared after leaving Roma by mutual consent.

Monchi had been at Roma since 2017 after making a name for himself as one of the best directors of football with Sevilla, bringing a number of young players into the club before moving them on for huge profits later on.

But this season things haven’t been going well for Roma, with manager Eusebio Di Francesco sacked after the club’s Champions League exit at the hands of Porto – their final hope for glory this season.

And now, Roma have confirmed Monchi’s early departure from the club by way of mutual consent.

Speaking on Monchi’s exit, Roma’s CEO Guido Fienga told the club’s official website: “I want to put on record our thanks to Monchi for his dedication during his time at the club and we wish him all the best for his future endeavours in football.”

Monchi also had his say on his departure, appearing to leave with positive feelings towards the club.

“I would like to thank President Pallotta, the club’s management, staff, players and fans for their support during my time at the club,” he said.

“I wish Roma a lot of success in the future.”

Monchi’s final clash with Roma fans

Though Monchi thanked Roma fans for their support during his time at the club, according to reports, the Spaniard had a sour moment in his final days with Roma.

According to Corriere dello Sport, as reported by Football Italia, a small group of Roma supporters confronted players and some of the club’s hierarchy to express their disgust in the current situation.

And, according to the report, Monchi responded to the abuse by saying: “In six months, I’ll take on each of you one one one.”

This led many to believe Monchi was letting slip over his time at Roma running out, and with the Spaniard’s exit now confirmed, links with Arsenal will intensify.
