On-loan Derby County midfielder Harry Wilson has spoken of the goodwill message he received from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after his sensational strike against Manchester United.
Wilson, 21, produced a thunderbolt free-kick straight out of the top drawer against the Red Devils in the third round of the Football League Cup last month to bring his side level at Old Trafford.
Frank Lampard’s side would finish the match on level terms with the Premier League heavyweights, but clinched victory through an 7-8 penalty shoot-out triumph, with Wilson also netting in the sudden death duel.
After the match, Wilson was overjoyed to receive recognition from the manager of his parent club, with Klopp lavishing praise on the youngster.
“It’s great to hear from the manager whose team you want to be in in the future,” enthused the 21-year-old to Liverpool’s official website.
Harry Wilson’s “delighted” with career path so far
After exploding onto the scene as a talented teenager in 2013 by making his competitive Wales debut at just 16 – the youngest ever debutant for the nation – Wilson’s stock experienced a downward trajectory after finding playing time limited at Anfield.
However, a productive loan spell with Hull City last term saw him re-emerge as a potential star and in the summer he signed a new long-term contract with the Reds, and now he is eager to push on.
“Early on in the year I was desperate to get out on loan and get some senior appearances in,” added Wilson.
“When Hull came calling it was a great, great move for me and when I went there I managed to get some goals and assists and get a senior Wales call-up.
“I got my full senior debut and a goal in China and this season with Derby has been great. I’m in the Wales squad regularly now and I’m delighted.”
The Wrexham-born winger has made a fine start to life at Pride Park, making nine first-team appearances and scoring two goals – one in the Championship and the aforementioned stunner against Man Utd.
Wilson also recently started in Wales’ 4-1 capitulation against Spain in a friendly on Thursday night, but he will be hoping to make a more significant impact when Ryan Giggs’ side clash with Ireland in the Uefa Nations League on Tuesday.
