Full player ratings: Lukaku matches Cristiano Ronaldo feat as Man Utd make UCL history vs PSG

Manchester United are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League thanks to a 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain.

United went into the game 2-0 down on aggregate but took the lead after just two minutes through Romelu Lukaku. Juan Bernat then put PSG back two goals ahead before Lukaku scored once to keep United’s hopes alive.

And just as PSG looked to be seeing out the game, Marcus Rashford scored from the penalty spot to send United through on away goals.

But, how did the players rate?

Paris Saint-Germain

Gianluigi Buffon – 4 – The veteran could do very little about Lukaku’s opening goal, being beaten by a composed finish. But Buffon had a moment to forget for United’s second, spilling Rashford’s effort from range to the feet of Lukaku. Well beaten by Rashford’s penalty.

Thilo Kehrer – 2 – Got off to the worst possible start in setting up Romelu Lukaku’s opener with a sloppy pass. Was fortunate not to be punished again for a slip in the middle of the pitch midway through the first half.

Thiago Silva – 7 – Perhaps should have been more aware of Lukaku in the build up to the opener, but tried to race back and stop the Belgian – albeit to no avail. More composed after half-time as United’s attack became more isolated.

Presnel Kimpembe – 7 – Was too lethargic for United’s second, walking inside area and watching on as Lukaku reacted quickest to Buffon’s mistake. Otherwise did well to keep United at bay, until being punished for handball in injury time.

Juan Bernat – 8 – Got forward a lot, giving Bailly and Young a tough time. Equalised for PSG, with a good run at the back post to tap in Mbappe’s cross. Had a good chance to double his tally but his shot was saved.

Marco Verratti – 8 – Had a quiet start but grew into the game against a largely inexperienced midfield. Controlled the match with his usual big-game performance, with exquisite passing and tackling. But, as it has been in Europe in the past, it was not enough.

Marquinhos – 7 – Looked decent in midfield alongside Verratti, though his performance was overshadowed by his partner.

Dani Alves – 7 – Played very high up the pitch, as a mixture of a wing-back and winger, looking to get at Shaw and Pereira when possible. His crossing left a lot to be desired, however.

Julian Draxler – 6 – Had a fairly quiet game was PSG favoured the left wing, but when he did get on the ball, the German did not do enough to worry United. Had to come off injured with 20 minutes to go.

Angel Di Maria – 7 – Enjoyed his time on the left, combining with Bernat. Looked to have put PSG back in control of the tie shortly after half-time but his finish was correctly ruled out for offside.

Kylian Mbappe – 5 – Made a good run to get onto the end of Alves’ pass, firing the ball across goal for Bernat to equalise. Tried to be too clever on occasion, though when it came off, it looked beautiful including his flick for Di Maria’s disallowed effort. Uncharacteristically average and it cost PSG.

Substitutes:

Thomas Meunier (for Kehrer 70) – 6 – Brought more stability defensively.

Leandro Paredes (for Draxler 70) – 6 – Added battle into the midfield as PSG looked to hold onto their lead.

Edinson Cavani (for Alves 90) – N/A – A late sub.

Manchester United

David de Gea – 5 – Had a very quiet game, could not do anything about Bernat’s goal.

Eric Bailly – 2 – Struggled massively at right-back, with Bernat and Di Maria getting forward a lot. Was stationary for Bernat’s equaliser and often left acres of space by tucking in too far. Taken off after 35 minutes, limped off after a collision with Verratti.

Chris Smalling – 8 – A solid no-nonsense centre-back’s performance, dealing with most of PSG’s attacks. Kept Mbappe largely quiet.

Victor Lindelof – 7 – Defended well throughout, helping Smalling ensure PSG’s attackers had little luck through the middle. Good defending to take the ball away from Alves as the Brazilian looked set to shoot

Luke Shaw – 7 – Did not have too much luck in attack but sat back well, restricting Draxler and Alves to poor

Ashley Young – 7 – Was poor with Bailly on the pitch, forced to drop deeper while having to do two jobs. Switched to left-back when Bailly went off and looked assured once more.

Fred – 6 – Looked to be struggling early on, being punished for two fouls in the first five minutes. Got into the game more with some good tackling, but still some way off the performances United would have been hoping for in his signing.

Scott McTominay – 8 – Verratti gave him a tough start to the game but the young midfielder came into his own, helping United wrestle back some of the midfield battle. His tackling was key in stopping United from being overrun.

Andreas Pereira – 6 – Showed a lot of fight defensively, though did not have many opportunities to show his attacking output.

Romelu Lukaku – 9 – Got United off to the perfect start with a composed finish and, when things were looking down, put the Red Devils ahead on the night again, reacting quickest to a mistake from Buffon.

Marcus Rashford – 7 – Put pressure on Kehrer for Lukaku’s opener, but his game slowed down with some poor decisions and passes. It was his shot, spilled by Buffon, for Lukaku’s second. Sent United through in injury-time with the calmest of penalties to complete an unlikely penalty.

Substitutes:

Diogo Dalot (for Bailly 35) – 6 – Came on in left midfield and was fortunate not to see a poor pass punished as the first half came to a close. Switched to right-back late on and it was his shot which resulted in United’s penalty.

Tahith Chong (for Pereira 80) – N/A – A late sub.

Mason Greenwood (for Young 87) – N/A – A late sub.
