Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has poured cold water on suggestions he could leave the club for a cut-fee figure in the winter transfer window, ending speculation of a move to Premier League rivals in January.
Ramsey, 27, had been at loggerheads with the Gunners’ hierarchy over a contract renewal in north London, but the club performed an astonishing U-turn last month and withdrew their offer for the club’s longest-serving player.
This has since opened the door for Ramsey to part company with the club despite making a fine start to the season, and speculation has already been gaining serious traction about possible future destinations for the Welshman.
The Caerphilly-born midfielder is reportedly in the crosshairs of both Manchester United and Liverpool, with both clubs weighing up January moves for the playmaker.
However, Ramsey has now closed the door on a winter exit, revealing that he wants to achieve “something special” under new manager Unai Emery this season.
“Everything has been going great with the club,” said Ramsey (via the Telegraph), whose existing contract expires at the end of the season. “We thought we were in a position where we had agreed a deal, but that is no longer the case.
“So I just have to carry on playing my football and do my best for Arsenal this season and I’ll leave the rest with the club now.
“That’s a decision that they have made. Things happen in football and you just have to get on with it and carry on playing the best I can. That is all I am concentrating on and giving my best for Arsenal.”
When asked whether he would stay at the club for the remainder of the campaign, he said: “Of course, yeah. I am contracted to Arsenal and I am going to do my best now this season to try and achieve something special.”
Ramsey will have the option of signing a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from January, but Arsenal are willing to listen to offers in January through fear of losing the midfielder for nothing in the summer.
It is believed Arsenal’s contract withdrawal came through Emery’s assessment of the player, and an unwillingness to meet the Welshman’s increased wage demands.
Ramsey started in Wales’ 4-1 capitulation against Spain on Thursday night, but will be hoping to produce a more significant performance against Ireland in the Nations League next week.
Why is Aaron Ramsey leaving Arsenal?
According to Avid Sports and Entertainment Group, the agency representing Ramsey, the player did not wish to leave Arsenal, who withdrew their contract offer to leave the Wales midfielder with “no other option” but to seek a new club.
In a series of now-deleted tweets posted overnight on 2 and 3 October, @avid_se said in response to an Arsenal fan on Twitter: “There is nothing we can do Charlie, the club made a decision. Life goes on.”

When it was suggested to them that Alexis Sanchez, who has only one goal for Manchester United this season, is an example of a player whose fortunes declined upon leaving Arsenal, the agency responded: “You’re right it isn’t always green and he didn’t want to leave, but now there is no other option.”
