Ryan Mason has urged Gareth Bale to re-join Tottenham Hotspur this summer ahead of their new stadium move.
Mason and Bale were teammates at White Hart Lane until 2013, when the latter moved to Spanish giants, Real Madrid.
Is Bale set for a Spurs return? Five key things to know…
- Bale made an £85.1m move from Tottenham to Real Madrid in 2013.
- Since then, the Welshman has won a La Liga title and four Champions Leagues.
- However, despite his achievements, Bale is often jeered by Real Madrid supporters and has suffered from various injuries.
- Ryan Mason believes he should return to Spurs ahead of their new stadium move next season.
- Bale has missed no fewer than 70 games due to injury during his time at the Bernabeu.
However, despite scoring a number of match-defining goals in cup finals, including a double in their 3-1 Champions League final win over Liverpool last season, the Wales international has struggled to fulfil his potential in the Spanish capital.
The 29-year-old was jeered as he replaced Marco Asensio during Real’s 1-0 defeat to Barcelona on Saturday, while he only managed another substitute appearance during their 4-1 humbling at home to Ajax on Tuesday.
And although he did admit Manchester United could be a good destination, Mason thinks Bale would be a marquee signing for Spurs ahead of their stadium move.
“Manchester United and Tottenham stick out for me, as they are both clubs looking to get back to that top level,” Mason told Sky Sports. “I think Manchester City are recruiting in a way where they recruit young, trying to develop.
“Bale could play anywhere, but I think for Tottenham it would be a huge statement signing, improve their front line and in wide positions. Why not make him that marquee signing as they move into that new stadium?
“The type of mentality he has, he’ll be thinking: ‘Where can I go and impact things and win things?’ He’ll want to go and make the rest of his career as successful as possible.”
Spurs return would be difficult for Bale, according to Rosenior
Joining Mason on Sky Sports, former England U21 full-back Liam Rosenior argued that Man Utd would be a better move for Bale, adding that Spurs are too ‘set in their ways’ to bring Bale back to north London.
“On current form and style of play, you’d probably say Manchester United. You could argue Tottenham, but they’re so set in their ways, it would be difficult for him to come back,” he said.

“The transition the club have made since he left has been massive, so it would be a totally different football club.
“He’s won four Champions Leagues, so from his point of view anywhere from Real is a step down. But I’m sure he’s at a stage in his career where he wants to be enjoying his football.
“He’ll want to go and make the rest of his career as successful as possible.”
