Romelu Lukaku has said he knows Solskjaer will be managing Man United permanently next season.
The Belgian made the comment after United beat PSG 3-3 on away goals in a remarkable turnaround by the Red Devils.
Will Ole stay? Five things to know…
- Solskjaer was appointed as United interim boss following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in November 2018.
- He has since impressed in the role, overseeing marquee wins over the likes of Tottenham and PSG, winning 14 in 17 in all competitions.
- Pochettino had been the reported favourite for the job next season, but the Norwegian, whose previous Premier League experience with Cardiff City was chastening, is now the favourite with the bookies.
- After Wednesday night’s historic win, a number of United players came out in support of Solskjaer getting the full-time role next season.
- Solskjaer himself has never hid his ambition of managing the club beyond his interim status.
On the night, United benefitted from an element of good luck, with Romelu Lukaku benefitting from an errant pass and defensive slip to steal in and open to the scoring after two minutes. Gigi Buffon then spilled a speculative Marcus Rashford shot to gift Lukaku another goal.
But with the scoreline at 2-1 on the night, following Bernat’s equaliser, a further goal was needed, and it appeared unlikely to come.
And yet a penalty was given, albeit for a harsh handball that was only given after a VAR consultation.
Rashford’s cool penalty ended PSG’s Champions League run and ensured safe passage to the quarter-finals for United.
The result led to Lukaku – who has scored six in three games – fully backing his current manager to continue in the role, telling Viasport:“I know Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to stay. There’s no doubt about that, he wants to stay, the players want him to stay. We’re doing really well. We’re playing like Manchester United should play.
“He’s a young coach, he has young players as well so it’s the perfect environment to develop and hopefully win trophies in the future.”
United players on Ole’s future
Lukaku wasn’t the only player to support the Norwegian.
Luke Shaw said after the game: “I don’t think I need to say much after all these results, it looks certain.
“We all love Ole and we love the job he’s done so far. We’re enjoying everything that’s going on at the moment and the results have shown that. We’ve had a couple of blips but that’s nine away matches (won in a row) now, they’re not easy games, but it shows what Ole and his staff have done. Long may that continue.”
Meanwhile Ashley Young tempered the enthusiasm, if only slightly, by saying: “It’s not down to the players to decide.
“If you look from the outside you’d say ‘Why not?’ He’s been fantastic since he’s come in, a breath of fresh air.
