Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been ridiculed for claiming the wind played a role in their goalless draw against Merseyside rivals Everton at Goodison Park.
Klopp’s post-match assessment came moments after an Everton ball boy sarcastically applauded him off the pitch which also drew plenty of reaction on social media.
Everton 0-0 Liverpool. Five things to know…
- This was the 233rd meeting between Everton and Liverpool in all competitions.
- Liverpool went into this weekend having won nine of the last 18 derbies. Everton failed to register a single win during that period.
- Liverpool had 10 shots on goal compared to Everton’s seven. Both teams had three shots on target with Liverpool dominating possession (57.8%).
- The result leaves Liverpool in second, a point behind leaders Manchester City, having now dropped 11 points across their last nine games.
- Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp squared up against an Everton ball boy before attributing the wind as factor behind the stalemate.
It was a frustrating afternoon for Liverpool who are in the middle of an intense title battle with defending Premier League champions Manchester City.
The Reds have now dropped 11 points across their last nine league outings – including four draws and defeat at City – which has seen them concede the initiative to Pep Guardiola’s men.

With emotions running high, and having being second best to Liverpool in recent meetings, there was a sense of jubilation at the full-time whistle for Everton’s incredible support who revelled in their arch-rivals dropping more ground.
A peculiar moment occurred when Klopp was heading towards the dressing room area. As he was approaching the dugout, after saluting Liverpool’s travelling support, an Everton ball boy was filmed sarcastically applauding the German tactician off and to say Klopp wasn’t amused is an understatement.

Blaming it on the wind
However that paled into insignificance with what came next. There’s an argument managers should be given time before answering questions after a game. With so much to digest it’s often the case they say things they would later regret.
Klopp, who wears his heart on his sleeve, is no stranger. Often in the past he’s got into trouble for his behaviour or what he’s said. Given the Reds dropped more points in their titanic championship battle with City there was always going to be the case of Klopp downplaying the result.
But no one could have foreseen what he was going to say. A manager making excuses for a bad result is as old as time itself. Klopp might have gone one step beyond when suggesting the wind played a significant role in the goalless stalemate. Which isn’t new for him.
“Very difficult game for different reasons,” he said. “I know people don’t like it when I say it, but the wind came from all different directions, the ball was in the air a lot.”

Naturally, this blew everyone away in a fit of hysterics, with some even suggesting the pressure to end Liverpool’s 29-year wait to be English champions getting to him.
Did Klopp just blame the wind for the draw?
— Sripad (@falsewinger) March 3, 2019
Jurgen Klopp blaming the wind for the draw. He’s also blamed United’s injuries, broadcasters cutting a game short, a ref becoming biased against them because he counted an offside Liverpool goal, a dry pitch, a wet pitch and snow. Self reflection isn’t one of his strong points.
