Barcelona cancel La Masia grad’s contract ahead of Iniesta reunion

Barcelona have agreed to cancel the contract of club midfielder Sergi Samper as he heads to Japan to reunite with Andreas Iniesta.

The player will appear in his final news conference tomorrow afternoon in Spain before heading east to play for J1 League side Vissel Kobe.

Barca boys together: Five things you need to know…

  1. Barcelona legend Andreas Iniesta joined Vissel Kobe last summer after spending over 16 years at the Catalan giants.
  2. Samper – a Barca youth graduate – joined the La Liga outfit at the age of six in 2001.
  3. The midfielder has made 13 appearances for the first team, not making a single La Liga appearance this campaign.
  4. The 24-year-old is yet to announce his impending move to Vissel Kobe but is expected to in tomorrow’s press conference.
  5. He will also be joining former Barcelona striker David Villa who also plies his trade at the Japanese outfit.

Samper has struggled to make a name for himself at Barcelona – such are the riches at the club’s disposal – and has opted to cancel his contract at the club, which Barcelona have accepted.

The development was announced today with Barcelona releasing a statement that reads: “The club publically would like to thank Sergi Samper for his dedication and commitment during his time at FC Barcelona and wishes him all the best for the future”

They also tweeted out the news with an image that simply read: “Thank you and good luck.”

Samper swaps La Liga for J1 League

Yet to be confirmed, it seems that Samper is on his way to Japan following his long spell trying to break through the ranks at Barcelona.

Samper has played just 33 minutes this season – in the Cope del Rey – and it seemed that his future was always going to be away from the Nou Camp side.

Letting Samper cancel his contract shows a certain sign of respect from Barcelona who have acknowledge that the player has not only shown loyalty to the club but also deserves the opportunity to make it as a footballer elsewhere.

That elsewhere seems to be the J1 League, where he will join up with Barca buddies Iniesta and David Villa at Vissel Kobe, who are just two games into their new season.

A fresh start for Samper, who could have done a lot worse than to pick a club with Iniesta playing at the heart of the midfield.
