Liverpool boss Klopp delivers quip in response to ‘wind excuse’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has made light of his previous ‘excuses’ of high winds following the Reds’ 4-2 win over Burnley.

Klopp was criticised by fans after blaming Liverpool’s goalless draw against Everton last week on the windy conditions at Goodison Park.

How did Klopp respond to questions on the wind? Four key things to know…

  1. Liverpool stayed within a point of Premier League leaders thanks to a 4-2 win over Burnley.
  2. The game was affected by strong winds at Anfield, which played a part in Burnley’s opening goal.
  3. Liverpool boss Klopp had previously been mocked for blaming the wind in a goalless draw with Everton.
  4. But the German joked with reporters when asked about the weather before admitting his side dealt with the conditions well.

Liverpool’s game against Burnley on Sunday was also plagued by gale-like conditions, which arguably played some part in the away side taking the lead as Ashley Westwood scored directly from a corner while Alisson failed to control his penalty area.

However, the Reds came back to win 4-2 and keep up the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City going into the final eight games of the season.

And Klopp believes his side’s success was partly due to Liverpool’s ability to deal with the swirling wind better than their opponents.

When asked about the blustery conditions on show at Anfield, Klopp joked with the BBC: “Are we allowed to talk about the conditions?

“You saw it. You have to be on the pitch to feel it, that’s how it is. It didn’t help Burnley today with their long-ball approach.

“You have to deal with it and we dealt with it really good and played our game.

“The first goal was maybe a little bit the wind but some other circumstances were not in our favour.

“In most countries it would not have been a goal – you cannot treat the goalkeeper like this in the six-yard box.”

Sean Dyche: The wind was tricky

Klopp was not alone in giving his thoughts on the strong wind at Anfield on Sunday, with Burnley manager Sean Dyche admitting it made his work hard.

“It was tricky,” he told BBC Sport.

“The wind was swirling. We wanted to ask questions and get the ball forward which I thought we did in spells.

“You cannot give a team like Liverpool four goals – we certainly gave them three. You can question the errors but we certainly made a game of it.

“In the first half I don’t think they had too many golden chances yet we were 2-1 down. Even at 3-1, the mentality of the group was good and we got a goal back.”
