Tottenham’s current level is not good enough for Kane, insists Sheringham

Tottenham need to start winning trophies in order to keep Harry Kane, according to former Spurs striker, Teddy Sheringham.

Spurs have not won a trophy since 2008 despite making considerable progress under Mauricio Pochettino and boasting stars including Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min.

Could Kane leave Tottenham? Five key things to know…

  1. Harry Kane came through the Tottenham academy to become one of the most feared strikers in Europe.
  2. The Englishman has scored 164 goals in 249 games for the club, helping them become a top-four regular.
  3. Kane has regularly been linked with a move away from Tottenham, with both Real Madrid and Manchester United touted as potential destinations.
  4. And Teddy Sheringham believes Spurs risk losing Kane unless they win a trophy.
  5. Tottenham last won a trophy in 2008, beating Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup final.

At the turn of 2019, Tottenham had been touted as one of three teams challenging for the Premier League title but four games without a win have seen them fighting for their place in the top four.

And Sheringham, who spent seven seasons at Tottenham across two spells, believes his former side could risk losing Kane unless they starting winning trophies.

“Harry will want to win stuff. He will be wanting to play at the very top,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It’s going to be a big factor with Harry that Tottenham are moving into a new stadium – but they have to win something.

“At the moment, they are nearly at the top. For me, that’s not good enough for Harry Kane because he is tops.

“There is going to come a time in Harry’s career when he is going to say: ‘I can’t be a nearly man any more. We have to go one step further for me to win things in my football career,'” added Sheringham, 52.

“You don’t get any younger in football and it’s amazing how quickly it flies by.”

Out of the title race as well as the FA Cup, Spurs’ last hope of glory this season comes in the Champions League, with Pochettino’s men in the quarter-finals after beating Borussia Dortmund 4-0 over two legs.

Pochettino: Tottenham are at their “real level”

Following Tottenham’s poor run of form domestically, which has them without a win since February 10, the north Londoners are 13 points behind league leaders Manchester City, despite having previously been considered in the title race.

But, speaking after Tottenham’s defeat to Southampton, Pochettino insisted his team are at their level now fighting for fourth, saying: “Yes, but it’s good.

“It’s good because a lot of people now are going to realise our real level and maybe start to stop talking about the perception.

“It’s important now to know that we need to fight a lot until the end of the season. We are in the Champions League but of course, the Champions League can disappear quickly and the Premier League is going to give the access next season to play again if you are in the top four.

“Of course, I’m going to say what I said before. I am a little bit worried, this change too much from the first half to the second half is only one reason, it’s mental. It’s about complacency. It’s about arrogance in a bad way.”
