Liverpool loanee hailed as the new Stefan Effenberg

Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic has been compared to Stefan Effenberg by Hertha Berlin manager Pal Dardai.

Grujic is currently on loan at Hertha, for whom the 22-year-old has made 14 Bundesliga appearances so far this season.

Who is Stefan Effenberg? Five key things to know…

  1. Stefan Effenberg is a former German midfielder who represented the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach.
  2. He won three Bundesliga titles and the Champions League with Bayern during his second spell with the club between 1998 and 2002.
  3. The 50-year-old made 35 appearances for the Germany national team, scoring five goals.
  4. His playing career ended in 2004 with Qatari club Al-Arabi.
  5. Effenberg briefly managed German side SC Paderborn in 2015/16.

Hertha Berlin are currently eighth in the Bundesliga having collected 35 points from their opening 24 games this term.

Grujic has gradually become a regular for the team, playing 90 minutes in each of Hertha’s last six Bundesliga outings.

And his manager Dardai has admitted the Liverpool loanee shares certain attributes with Effenberg.

“I’ve never had a midfielder like Marko Grujic before. For me, he’s the new Stefan Effenberg,” Dardai said, according to BuliNews.

“He was tall, too, but very safe on the ball despite that, and he always knew when to calm down the team, when to go into a duel and when to move forward. You either have that ability or you don’t.”

Does Grujic have a future at Liverpool?

In response to Dardai’s comments, Grujic said: “These are big words for me. He’s (Effenberg) a huge name.”

The Serbia international will now be hoping to continue his impressive form and return to Liverpool to fight for a place in the first-team.

But Grujic’s future at Anfield is up in the air with Liverpool currently well stocked in central midfield.

The likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and James Milner are all currently fighting for those places in the team, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to return to action soon.

Indeed, Grujic may have to leave Liverpool on loan again next term in search of first-team football.
