Man Utd’s ‘answer to Fernando Torres’ tipped to join Atletico Madrid

Former Manchester United winger Andrei Kanchelskis has likened Alexis Sanchez’s Old Trafford plight to that of Fernando Torres at Chelsea.

Sanchez has struggled to rediscover his Arsenal form since leaving the Gunners for United in January last year, drawing comparisons to Torres’ time at Stamford Bridge.

What happened to Fernando Torres at Chelsea? Five key things to know…

  1. Torres was ranked among the best players in the Premier League when he left Liverpool for Chelsea in January 2011.
  2. The Spanish striker scored 81 goals in 142 appearances for Liverpool across three-and-a-half seasons at Anfield.
  3. A big-money move to Stamford Bridge failed to work out as Torres scored just once in his first half-season with Chelsea.
  4. He went on to find the net 45 times in 172 appearances for the Blues but never scored more than eight league goals in a single campaign.
  5. Torres eventually returned to his former club Atletico Madrid. He now plays for Sagan Tosu in Japan.

Sanchez is set to miss the next four to six weeks through injury, the latest setback in a difficult year for the Chilean.

And Kanchelskis, who won two Premier League titles with the Red Devils, believes Sanchez is becoming United’s answer to Torres.

“Sanchez is at risk of finishing his career in the same way [Fernando] Torres did at Chelsea,” Kanchelskis told bwin. “Torres was the main man at Atletico Madrid and Liverpool, but he is now remembered for the tough time he had at Chelsea.

“Sanchez has clearly shown that he has the capability to play with the best teams in the world, but Man Utd doesn’t suit his style of play and he’s never looked settled into the dressing room since joining the club.

“I’ve previously said that Ole should give him the chance to express himself as a winger, but now looking at his form and how often he’s been used, I think it’s best for Man Utd and Sanchez if he were to move on this summer.

“I can’t see him moving to another Premier League club and I think he should move back to La Liga. I see Sanchez joining a club like Atletico Madrid as there are currently a lot of problems at Real Madrid and he wouldn’t go back to Barcelona. He will most likely have to take a pay cut, but it’s for the benefit of his career.”

What has gone wrong for Sanchez at Man United?

Sanchez scored 80 goals in 166 appearances for Arsenal, winning two FA Cups and a Community Shield.

With his contract running down midway through the 2017/18 campaign, Sanchez opted to join Manchester United in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

But the 30-year-old has scored just five goals in 41 games since joining United, only three of which have come in the Premier League.

Injuries haven’t helped, but Sanchez has failed to replicate his teammates by improving under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s management.

Whether he has a long-term future at the club remains to be seen.
