The Chinese Football Association has quashed rumours of Jose Mourinho being offered the role of China’s national team manager.
Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United in December after a poor start to his third campaign, and has been recently linked with a return to Real Madrid to replace Santiago Solari.
Where next for Mourinho? Five key things to know…
- Jose Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United in December.
- The 56-year-old has been linked with a number of roles since then, though has not yet committed his future to any club.
- One rumour reported Mourinho has been offered the job of managing the Chinese national team, who were last coached by Marcello Lippi.
- But the Chinese FA have now confirmed they have not made any offer to Mourinho.
- Mourinho is currently one of the favourites to replace Santiago Solari as Real Madrid manager.
But, more bizarrely, the Portuguese has also recently been linked with a move to international football management and particularly the Chinese national team who have been without a manager since Marcello Lippi’s departure in January.
However, the Chinese FA have put any hope of Mourinho taking charge to rest, urging fans not to believe the rumours.
“News that the CFA invited the famous coach Mourinho to serve as head coach of the national side is not true,” the CFA wrote on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, as reported by AFP.
“For media and fans, please don’t believe this.”
Regardless of whether the Chinese FA had offered Mourinho their national team role, it is unlikely the Portuguese would have taken the opportunity.
Shortly after ruling out a move to Benfica, Mourinho mentioned his desire to return to the top level football – where he believes he belongs.
He said in January: “I want to coach, I’m too young [to retire]. I’m in football for a long, long time. I’ll be 56 in a couple of weeks. Too young, really too young.
“Where I’m going to stay is where I belong. I belong to top football, I belong to top-level football and it is where I’m going to be.”

Mourinho to take charge of Real Madrid?
Having previously returned to Chelsea after a successful first spell at Stamford Bridge, Jose Mourinho is once again being linked with a former club.
This time it’s Real Madrid, who have endured a poor week under Santiago Solari which included a humiliating 4-1 home defeat to Ajax to send the defending champions out of the Champions League.
And, according to former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon, Mourinho is the club’s first choice replacement.
“I have no doubt Mourinho is the first option for the president (Florentino Perez),” he said.
“He’s been called in the last weeks.
“It was when Zinedine Zidane left, Mourinho was with Manchester United and he said it was not the right moment to come back, but maybe now he’s free.
“I think there will be many chances he will be on that bench next season.”
