Former Napoli star Marek Hamsik has revealed what would have persuaded him to stay at the club.
The Slovakian international left the club for Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang last month.
Hamsik’s Napoli legacy? Four things you need to know…
- Hamsik moved to Napoli from Brescia for a €5.5 million transfer fee in 2007.
- The Slovak is their all-time record appearance holder with 520 outings for Napoli.
- He is also their all-time top goalscorer with 121 goals.
- Hamsik won two Coppa Italia trophies and one Supercopa Italiana throughout his Napoli career.
Speaking to reporters, Hamsik discussed his ending with Napoli and revealed that he remains homesick to this very day.
However, he also revealed that if the club had been battling for the Scudetto on a regular basis, then he would have stayed with the club for longer than he eventually did.
“At the end of the match against Sampdoria, I didn’t know how things would pan out,” their former captain told Il Mattino, as translated by Football Italia.
“Then I found an agreement and I was sure that the deal would be done, even when negotiations slowed down.
“I miss everything in Naples, my friends, the food… It’s my home, it has been for 12 years.
“I miss the San Paolo, hearing the fans cheer. I miss games like those against Juventus, which gives unique and extraordinary sensations like few others.
“If we’d been fighting for the Scudetto, maybe I wouldn’t have left because winning the Scudetto with Napoli, making Neapolitans happy, would’ve been incredible and something I wouldn’t have swapped for the world.
“The difference last season was that we dropped points when we shouldn’t have, while Juventus didn’t.
“We didn’t lose the Scudetto in a hotel last season. Matches and championships are lost on the field, not in a hotel. And I think we lost it in Florence.”

Did Juventus’ dominance deny Hamsik glory with Napoli?
The Serie A has largely been dominated by Juventus across the past decade.
Despite the obvious talent among the Napoli playing staff, they haven’t been able to get their hands on the illustrious league trophy that Hamsik desired.
The previous three seasons saw Napoli finish second, third and then second again but they couldn’t go that one step further.
Juventus have finished top of Serie A every season since 2011 and currently lead the league table by 19 points.
