Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince has suggested that he would have done “exactly the same” as current caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer has overseen a monumental turnaround at Old Trafford, with United’s form since the Norwegian’s arrival beyond impressive.
Ince or OGS? Five things you need to know…
- Solskajer took over at Manchester United in December following the sacking of former club boss Jose Mourinho
- The former club striker has lost just one match in charge of the club.
- United are yet to lose in 12 Premier League matches, winning 10 of them.
- They reversed a 2-0 deficit to progress to the Champions League quarterfinals following a last-gasp 3-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain.
- They have climbed above both Arsenal and Chelsea into fourth place in the Premier League table.
Discussing life at Manchester United under the guidance of Solskajer, Ince wanted to clarify previous comments that suggested ‘anyone’ could have come into the club and turn things around.
Although he insists that his words have been taken too literally, Ince did stress that if he had taken over as United boss, he would have done exactly the same as Solskjaer.
“When I said ‘anyone’ could’ve done the job Ole has done, I didn’t literally mean anyone. That’s been taken completely out of context,” he told Paddy Power.
“What I said was that someone like Mark Hughes or Steve Bruce, who has the history and spirit of the club, could have gone in there initially and turned it [around].
“The team were down in the dumps, unhappy, and weren’t playing the way they wanted to play. We all knew that.
“If I’d have gone into United, I’d have done exactly what Ole did. I’d have got a smile back on the players’ faces, got them enjoying training again, and told them to go out and play the way they want to play.
“That wasn’t hard to resolve, because we saw the negativity coming out of Old Trafford.”

A famous night in Paris
Not even Ince would have been so optimistic as to say that United had a realistic chance of progressing through to the Champions League quarter-finals this season.
United were 2-0 down after losing at Old Trafford in the first leg of the round of 16.
Manchester United are the first team in Champions League history to progress to the next round after losing the first leg at home by at least two goals.

Never before has a team overcome a deck stacked so unfavourably against them in the Champions League, let alone with a large number of first-team players absent from the second leg in France’s capital due to injury or suspension.
They took the lead but PSG soon equalised, and many thought that was it for the English side.
However, a mistake from legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon allowed Romelu Lukaku to score his second of the night before a controversial VAR decision fell in United’s favour in the dying moments of the match.
A Presnel Kimpembe handball resulted in a United spot-kick. Up stepped Marcus Rashford, who fired it into the back of the net, sealing United’s progression and most likely, the United job for Ole.
