Matthijs de Ligt admits Van Dijk partnership at Liverpool ‘could happen’

Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has admitted he could link up with Holland teammate Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.

The teenager has a growing list of admirers following an impressive rise to stardom with many observers feeling a departure from Amsterdam is certain to happen this summer.

Could Liverpool sign De Ligt? Five things you need to know…

  1. De Ligt is the latest young star to emerge from Ajax’s academy
  2. The 19-year-old won the 2018 European Golden Boy award for his performances for the Dutch club.
  3. De Ligt has already made 13 appearances for the Netherlands national team, playing alongside Virgil van Dijk.
  4. And the teenager has admitted he could see himself lining up alongside Van Dijk for a club to further improve his game.
  5. De Ligt has made 101 appearances for Ajax’s first team and is the youngest captain in the club’s history.

De Ligt, who is Ajax’s youngest ever captain, played an instrumental role in de Godenzonen’s recent successes over Feyenoord and Real Madrid which saw them reach the KNVB Beker final and Champions League quarter-final respectively.

He’s likely to be playing his final games for the record 33-time Dutch champions with a host of ‘super clubs’ reportedly keen to sign him including Barcelona – where close friend Frenkie de Jong will be moving to in June – Juventus, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

De Ligt is keeping his cards close to his chest, but has spoken well of Liverpool’s defensive colossus Van Dijk, whom he’s struck a formidable partnership with at international level.

“Virgil is a player who has experience in the top leagues,” he told Goal.

“Of course you would want to learn from him. It’s very helpful playing alongside him in the Dutch team. It could happen (playing alongside him at club level).

“He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I’m not focused on them. I focus on Ajax, and then I will see where I’ll end up.”

Where next for De Ligt?

Whoever eventually signs De Ligt will most likely have to pay top dollar. Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018, is currently the world’s most expensive defender having set the Reds back £75m. There’s a great chance the fee Ajax receives for De Ligt will smash that record.

Barcelona, who have already prized one young star from Ajax in the aforementioned De Jong, are currently the favourites to land his signature especially as De Ligt has hinted his keenness to continue playing alongside De Jong. Juventus and Bayern Munich are possible destinations but you can’t rule out PSG or the lure of the Premier League.
