Six Premier League records Man City or Liverpool could still break this season

With the Premier League season heading into the crunch period, there are still a number of things that could happen.

Liverpool will be hopeful of recapturing the form that saw them go on a run of nine straight wins between mid-November and the end of December in order to keep their title dreams alive.

City will be determined to not give up any more ground as they look to make it back-to-back Premier League titles for the first time in their history.

These two teams have lit up the top flight this season with attacking prowess and defensive solidity, making for one of the most intriguing title races in recent years.

There are still a number of Premier League records available to both clubs as the final nine games approach.

With that in mind, Squawka Football has taken a look at which records could still be broken before the end of the league campaign by both Liverpool and Manchester City…

Manchester City – fewest Premier League draws

It may shock a few people to know that Manchester City have only drawn two games in the top flight this season.

Those came way back in August and October when an away point at newly promoted Wolves was followed four games later by a tense stalemate against title rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

Since then the Citizens have not shared the points in any game, losing four and winning the rest.

No side has gone an entire Premier League season drawing just two games with the current record of three being held by Chelsea in both 1997/98 and 2016/17.

Manchester City will not want to drop any more points so this record would be a welcome addition to those they have already collected.

Liverpool – most clean-sheets in a single season

This one will take some doing by the Reds, who currently have 17 clean-sheets in 2018/19. The record of 25, set by Chelsea in 2004-05, is still within reach but they would have to go the entirety of the remaining games without letting in a single goal to achieve it.

Maybe this one is asking too much with Liverpool still having to face top four opposition in Tottenham and fifth place Chelsea but they haven’t allowed a goal in any of the last four games so maybe, just maybe…

Manchester City and Liverpool – most Premier League points without winning a title

This is the record that neither club will want but both can still get. The current record stands at 89 points when Manchester United finished second to city rivals Manchester City in 2011/12 – that famous Aguero strike against QPR will live long in every City fan’s memory.

With Manchester City on 71 points and Liverpool on 70, either one of them could potentially finish second with a massive 97 points this season.

Manchester City and Liverpool – least number of points for a title winner

In 1996/97 Manchester United won the Premier League with just 75 points but, technically, that is still a record that both sides could achieve.

If they both suddenly go on shocking runs and all the chasing pack do too then 74 points for the title would be a startling and equally unlikely scenario.

Manchester City – most home wins

Although Manchester City can’t break this record, which currently stands at 18 (held by Chelsea, Man Utd and City themselves) they can equal it if they win their remaining four games at the Etihad which would be an amazing achievement.

If they do that then they will likely win the title but with 27 points still up for grabs, it promises to be an exciting finish.

Individual

Andy Robertson – most assists by a defender

The Liverpool left-back has been excellent this season for Klopp’s side. He has bagged himself eight assists in the top flight already and will have an eye on the record set by Andy Hinchcliffe and Leighton Baynes, which stands at 11.

Three more will see him equal that tally and but four is needed to break it. With games running out this would be an amazing achievement but then the Scotsman has been described as super-human at times this season. Now he has to prove it.

Alisson – most clean-sheets in a single season

The Brazilian has made a huge difference to the Reds this campaign helped, of course, by the brilliance of Virgil van Dijk in front of him.

The former Roma man has already grabbed 17 shut-outs in 2018/19 and still has a chance of break Petr Cech’s record of 24, set back in 2004/05.

With just nine games to go he will have his work cut out but even if he doesn’t break the record, Liverpool fans will still rate him as the best stopper in the Premier League, after all, he has kept three more clean-sheets than any other top-flight goalkeeper this season already.

Sergio Aguero – most consecutive 20+ goal seasons

Not many players can hit 20+ goals on a consistent basis in the Premier League yet Sergio Aguero is just two goals from making five consecutive seasons of doing this.

Thierry Henry was the last player to achieve that feat when he hit over 20 in every season between 2001-02 and 2005-06.

Sergio Aguero should equal that, as could Harry Kane this season, and will then be set up to smash another record in 2019-20 when he can make it an incredible six 20+ goals seasons in a row.
