Spurs’ Davinson Sanchez guilty of ‘naive’ defending too often – Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand has accused Tottenham Hotspur central defender Davinson Sanchez of naive defending following their stalemate against Arsenal.

Spurs and the Gunners played out a 1-1 draw at Wembley but Unai Emery’s men could have won it late. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw his penalty brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris in the last few minutes of the match.

Sanchez’s performance: Five things to know…

  1. Sanchez was playing in his fourth north London derby.
  2. He’d lose his first before winning and drawing the next two.
  3. The 22-year-old Colombian international completed the 90 minutes; registering an 89% pass completion rate (54/61).
  4. His mistimed interception attempt would lead to Arsenal’s opener scored by Aaron Ramsey.
  5. Sanchez would give away a 90th-minute penalty, after being adjudged to have unfairly brought Aubameyang down.

Aubameyang, who came on with 34 minutes left remaining in the game, was adjudged to have been fouled by Sanchez who earlier in the game saw his mistimed interception lead to Arsenal’s opener scored by Aaron Ramsey in his final north London derby.

The 22-year-old Colombian international pleaded his case to referee Anthony Taylor with replays showing the Spurs centre-back had a strong argument. Aubameyang, though, failed to punish Sanchez and company.

Despite his admission of innocence, there was no escaping any criticism with six-time Premier League winner Rio Ferdinand, whilst serving as a pundit on BT Sport, being strong in his appraisal.

“I don’t think it was a penalty but Sanchez gives the referee an opportunity,” he said.

“That’s his mistake, he doesn’t need to tackle. He’s going to the touchline, show him off the pitch. I’ve seen that too often in his game, if I’m honest.”

Dortmund bound

The meeting of Arsenal came in the middle of three big games for Spurs. Mauricio Pochettino’s side – following their surprise defeat at the hands of Burnley – would subsequently face Chelsea, Arsenal and then Borussia Dortmund.

The run began with a lacklustre performance at Stamford Bridge, where they fell to a 2-0 defeat thus all but ending their championship dreams for another season, before snatching a draw from the jaws of defeat against their greatest foe.

Next up is a visit to Germany where Spurs defend a 3-0 lead in their Champions League round of 16 tie against Dortmund.

Spurs arrive with BVB also going through a tough patch. Lucien Favre’s side have won just one of their last seven matches in all competitions with six points collected from the last 15 available in the Bundesliga allowing perennial champions Bayern Munich back into the title picture.
