Spurs striker Son Heung-min reveals his football “idol”

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has admitted he wouldn’t be where he is in football if it weren’t for his father.

The South Korean has once again stepped up to the plate for Spurs this season as they battle for a place in the Premier League’s top four.

Son’s sensational season: Five things you need to know…

  1. Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for a transfer fee of £22 million.
  2. The versatile forward has made 176 appearances for Spurs, scoring 63 goals.
  3. This season, the 26-year-old has scored 11 Premier League goals in 23 matches, just three off his PL record with nine games remaining.
  4. Son scored in each of the three Premier League games Harry Kane was absent for due to injury.
  5. He also scored against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League round of 16 first leg fixture.

Admired throughout the league as an extremely talented attacker in the Tottenham Hotspur ranks, Son has established himself as a vital cog in the Mauricio Pochettino machine.

His rise from Korean football to the Premier League has been astonishing and according to the player, his main inspiration for pursuing football was his father.

Speaking to reporters, he said: “My father was thinking of what I needed all the time.

“He has done everything for me and without him, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today. As a player, you need some help. It’s also important to meet a great manager and then there’s luck, too.

“Everything has come together for me.”

“I was his son, it was tough”

Son discussed in more detail about how his father would help prepare him for the vigorous life of a professional footballer.

Alongside his older brother, Son would be instructed to partake in various training exercises that resulted in tough love from his father.

He continued: “When I was 10 or 12, he came in to coach my school team and we were training, 15 or 20 players.

“The programme was for us all to keep the balls up for 40 minutes. When someone dropped the ball, my father would not say anything.

“But as soon as I dropped it, he made us all start over from the beginning. The players understood, because I was his son and, yeah, it was tough. But when you think about it now, this was the right way.”

With his respect for his father clear, Spurs fans will be extremely appreciative of the efforts made by Son to reach the levels he has within the game.
