Uefa issue statement on Man Utd penalty v PSG

Uefa have released a statement explaining why Manchester United were awarded an injury-time penalty against Paris Saint-Germain in their recent Champions League clash.

United beat PSG 3-1 in Paris to overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, putting the French side on the receiving end of another historic comeback.

Why were Man Utd awarded a penalty against PSG? Five key things to know…

  1. Manchester United were trailing 3-2 on aggregate to PSG going into injury time of their Champions League last-16 second leg.
  2. On the brink of going out, Red Devils were awarded a late penalty as Presnel Kimpembe was punished for handball.
  3. The decision was given after the referee consulted with VAR, but still brought some controversy.
  4. And now, Uefa have released details on why the referee decided a penalty was the right call.
  5. Marcus Rashford stepped up to take the spot and duly converted, completing United’s historic comeback.

Two goals from Romelu Lukaku, either side of a Juan Bernat finished, had not looked to be enough for United until the Red Devils were awarded a penalty in injury time for handball on Presnel Kimpembe.

The referee, Damir Skomina, did not initially see the incident and but after referring to VAR decided to point to the spot.

Since the end of the match, the incident has been heavily discussed and, in a departure from the norm, Uefa have come out to explain the penalty decision.

A statement read: “The VAR, after checking various different angles available to him, recommended to the referee an on-field review following the penalty area incident.

“Given that the referee did not recognise the incident clearly during live play (referred to as serious missed incident in the VAR protocol) an on-field review was conducted.

“Following the on-field review, the referee confirmed that the distance that the ball travelled was not short and the impact could therefore not be unexpected. The defender’s arm was not close to the body, which made the defender’s body bigger thus resulting in the ball being stopped from travelling in the direction of the goal. The referee, therefore, awarded a penalty kick.

“All the above-mentioned decisions were made in full compliance with the VAR protocol.”

Marcus Rashford stepped up to convert the penalty and send Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side though, his first effort from the spot in competitive football for United.

Ferdinand confused by penalty decision

A decision which was discussed around the world, former footballers were keen to have their say on Manchester United’s penalty.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand appeared that night on BT Sport’s coverage of the game and, though he expressed his delight at the decision, the Englishman admitted he thought it was wrong.

“The way you guys are seeing this as referees,” Ferdinand said.

“People who are not on the panel with VAR, if you are blocking a shot and coming out as a defender, you have to have your hands behind your back to make sure it’s not a penalty.

“I don’t understand that, which player can come out and have balance with hands behind their back or immediately down by their side.

“When you stand, you stand like this (arms slightly away from body), you don’t stand like this (hands straight down) – this isn’t natural.

“Your natural position is like this (arms slightly out). When you jump his hands aren’t up here (in the air), they’re here (out by the side). I don’t get it, I don’t think it’s handball. I love it that it is handball.”
