AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso has revealed he could not stop Andre Silva joining Sevilla on loan over the summer.
Silva has made a flying start to life in Spain, scoring seven goals in seven La Liga appearances so far after finding the net just twice in 24 Serie A games for Milan last season.
The striker joined Milan from Porto in the summer of 2017 but struggled to settle at the San Siro, although he did score eight goals in 14 Europa League appearances for the Italian giants.
Milan have won only two of their six league outings so far this term, raising questions about whether they should have tried harder to retain Silva.
But Gattuso has said they had no choice but to let the Portugal international leave.
“He didn’t want to stay. He wanted to leave at all costs,” Gattuso said (via AS).
“He’s scoring goals now and we did everything possible to persuade him to stay but he wanted to go, like [Carlos] Bacca when he went to Villarreal.”
Among Europe’s finest
Only Krzysztof Piątek of Genoa has scored more goals (eight) than Andre Silva in Europe’s top five leagues so far this season.
Neymar has also scored seven, but two of those were penalties. Six of Silva’s goals have come from open play – the exception came from a corner.
The 22-year-old could feature for Sevilla against FC Krasnodar in the Europa League on Thursday night.
