Premier League’s most creative Englishman? Three new faces in Southgate’s latest England squad

England manager Gareth Southgate has named his squad for the upcoming Uefa Nations League matches against Spain and Croatia, giving James Maddison, Jadon Sancho and Mason Mount their first senior call-ups.

Leicester City midfielder Maddison has enjoyed a good start to the season in the Premier League, creating 15 chances so far, more than any other English player in the division.

Sancho, 18, has had a similar vein of form with Borussia Dortmund, recording five assists in the Bundesliga – more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues despite still waiting for his first start.

Meanwhile 19-year-old Mason Mount has started his loan spell with Derby County well in both league and cup, particularly catching the eye as the Rams beat Manchester United in the Carabao Cup – becoming the first outfield player to receive a senior England call-up whilst playing for a Championship side since Wilfried Zaha in 2012.

The squad also sees recalls for midfielders Harry Winks, Ross Barkley and Nathaniel Chalobah, with the latter still awaiting his first England cap.

However, there was no place for Burnley goalkeeper Joe Hart after his promising start to the season, with Southgate opting for Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland, Alex McCarthy and Marcus Bettinelli for his shot-stoppers.

Also big names to be left out are Dele Alli, Fabian Delph, Adam Lallana, Jesse Lingard and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The announcement came shortly after the FA revealed Southgate had signed a new contract as England manager, keeping him in charge of the Three Lions until after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Full squad:

Goalkeepers: Marcus Bettinelli (Fulham), Jack Butland (Stoke City), Alex McCarthy (Southampton), Jordan Pickford (Everton).

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Harry Maguire (Leicester City), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), James Tarkowski (Burnley), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham Hotspur), Kyle Walker (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Chelsea), Nathaniel Chalobah (Watford), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Mason Mount (on loan at Derby County from Chelsea), Harry Winks (Tottenham Hotspur).
