England in confident mood ahead of Croatia decider, according to Pickford

England are in a confident mood ahead of their Uefa Nations League decider, according to Jordan Pickford.

The Everton stopper has been in fine form for his country in 2018, being one of the heroes in England’s charge to the World Cup over the summer before playing a key role in the Three Lions’ famous 3-2 win over Spain in October.

That result, along with Croatia’s win over Spain by the same scoreline, means England now face a straight shootout with the side that knocked them out of the World Cup semi-final, with the winner advancing to next year’s Nations League finals.

And Pickford has said their recent performances against top sides has left Gareth Southgate’s squad with plenty of confidence as they head into Sunday’s Wembley clash.

“We know we are capable of beating the top teams and we have proven that by beating Spain,” the 24-year-old told Sky Sports. “They are back on form to be where they should be because they are a top-five team in the world.

“We are holding our own against these top teams and we need to kick on.

“As a group, we all want to win every game we play and if we win every game we play, that will take us to the Nations League semi-finals and final.”

Pickford, who has 14 England caps to date, is also relishing the chance to play a big match in front of a sell-out Wembley crowd and hopes the England fans create a strong atmosphere to suit the occasion.

The former Sunderland man added: “It will be a great game for us, a sell out at Wembley and the game’s got something on it. Hopefully, the atmosphere will be good and we’ll be tactically ready to win the game.”

England’s crunch game against Croatia kicks off at 2 pm GMT on Sunday.
