Raheem Sterling was right to leave Liverpool, says Jamie Carragher

Raheem Sterling made the right decision in leaving Liverpool to join Manchester City, according to former Reds defender Jamie Carragher.

The England international moved to City from Liverpool in 2015 with many Reds fans criticising him for following the money in football.

But since joining City, Sterling has taken his game to another level and is starting to win trophies with two League Cups and a Premier League title under his belt.

And Carragher believes Sterling’s on-pitch progression more than justifies the winger’s move to Man City, regardless of Liverpool fans’ upset about it.

“No matter how it came about – or how unpalatable to Liverpool supporters to lose such an important player – there is no-one who can look at how his career has progressed and say he made the wrong decision,” he told the Telegraph.

“He left for footballing reasons given where Liverpool stood at the time and the direction City were heading. Raheem was guaranteed to compete for the Premier League and Champions League every season, and work under one of the best managers of all-time.

“Since Pep Guardiola arrived, Raheem’s game has gone up a level so he now ranks alongside Harry Kane as England’s best player. The difference is Kane has taken club form on to the international stage.

“Raheem’s next challenge is to make his recent performance against Spain a regular occurrence for England.”

Sterling’s performances have recently earned him a new three-year extension to his current deal at Manchester City, with the winger pledging his future at the club until 2023 and reportedly earning up to £300,000 per week.

Sterling’s City career so far

Aside from winning three trophies in three years with Manchester City, working under Pep Guardiola has brought big improvements to Sterling’s ability.

In 154 appearances for City in all competitions, Sterling has scored 51 goals averaging one every three games – some improvement on his 23 in 129 matches for Liverpool.

Last season alone Sterling levelled his tally for Liverpool with 23 goals in 46 games as City won the Premier League and Carabao Cup.
