Tottenham Hotspur v PSV Eindhoven predictions and match preview

Tottenham Hotspur are in desperate need of three points to keep their diminishing hopes of progression in the Champions League alive as they host PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

The Lilywhites sit on just one point with three games remaining, meaning any more slip-ups will see them knocked out of the competition.

They are odds-on favourites for the three points at Wembley this evening. Read on for Tottenham v PSV Eindhoven live stream options, team news, predicted XIs, stats and TV channel info.

When is Tottenham v PSV Eindhoven?

Competition: Champions League

Venue: Wembley Stadium

Date: Tuesday, 6 November

Kick-off: 8PM GMT

Match preview

Tottenham Hotspur are enduring a torrid time of things in the Champions League so far this season, picking up just one point from their opening three games after defeats to Inter Milan and Barcelona and a disappointing away draw in the reverse of this fixture at PSV Eindhoven two weeks ago.

The Lilywhites managed to top their group last season despite being pitted against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, so boss Mauricio Pochettino will not be happy with how things have gone in the competition so far. The Argentinian will be especially disappointed with how his side have finished games as they were leading on 85 minutes in both of their away matches in the group stage thus far.

As their new stadium remains uncompleted, Spurs have been forced to play their home games at Wembley again so far this season, and they look less comfortable with their surroundings this time around, losing three of their five games at the national stadium so far this term in all competitions.

Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven are in the same boat as their opponents, having picked up just one point from their three games so far. Boeren were hammered 4-0 by Barcelona on the opening day and let an early lead slip against Inter Milan in a 1-2 home defeat to the Nerazzurri before that 2-2 draw with the Lilywhites last time out.

Mark van Bommel’s side have enjoyed a perfect start to the Eredivisie season with 11 wins in 11 league games so far this term, but they were dumped out of the KNVB Beker by second-tier outfit RKC Waalwijk last week. They’ll be hoping to take at least a point here to remain in touching distance of the Europa League, even if catching Barca and Inter seems unlikely at this point.

Where can I watch live?

Tottenham vs PSV Eindhoven can be viewed by UK residents on BT Sport 2 and BT Sport 2 HD.

The game is also available to watch on fuboTV.

Where have Spurs gone wrong in the Champions League this season?

Individual errors and lapses in concentration have cost Spurs dearly so far this season. The two late goals conceded in the 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan on Matchday One set the tone somewhat and more untimely mistakes have been Tottenham’s undoing against Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. With the home advantage here, we can see Spurs being a little more comfortable and a victory will keep their faint hopes of progression alive, providing Inter don’t beat Barcelona at the San Siro.

How can PSV limit Tottenham’s potent attack at Wembley?

Although he’s still finding the net on a fairly regular basis, Harry Kane doesn’t look at his best at the moment, and if the PSV defence can keep their shape and stay close to him, the Spurs forward will be forced to drop deep to receive the ball where he is less dangerous. Expect Van Bommel to deploy Pablo Rosario and Jorrit Hendrix in more withdrawn roles than they are used to playing in the Eredivisie in order to limit the space available for the likes of Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen to operate in.

How does Pochettino solve Tottenham’s midfield crisis?

Although it’s fair to say that Moussa Dembele is no longer the force he once was in midfield, his injury at Molineux this weekend comes at a terrible time for the Lilywhites. Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama are set to miss out again, meaning Moussa Sissoko may have to be deployed in a defensive midfield role.

Alternatively, Pochettino may look to play Christian Eriksen centrally, although that could leave his side susceptible to the counter-attack. Although Sissoko has his limitations, he has the physical tools necessary to play the role in emergency situations, but the Spurs boss will no doubt be hoping those injury problems start to ease sooner rather than later.

Head-to-head

This is only the fourth-ever meeting between these two famous European sides and thus far they have yielded one win each and one draw.

Prior to them being drawn in this Champions League group, the only previous meetings came in a two-legged UEFA Cup clash back in 2008 at the Round of 16 stage. After a 1-0 victory for each side in the respective away legs, the Dutch side progressed after a penalty shoot-out victory at the Philips Stadion.

Tottenham wins: 1 Draws: 1 PSV Eindhoven wins: 1

Team news

Tottenham are still suffering from something of an injury crisis at the moment. Moussa Dembele joins Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier, Danny Rose and Victor Wanyama on the sidelines after he was withdrawn during Saturday’s win over Wolves. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will also miss out through suspension after being sent off in the Netherlands two weeks ago.

New Zealand international Ryan Thomas, who is likely to miss the remainder of the season, is the only likely absentee for PSV. Mark van Bommel will welcome back winger Steven Bergwijn after he missed out in the reverse fixture two weeks ago.

Predicted Tottenham XI: Gazzaniga, Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Winks, Sissoko, Lucas, Eriksen, Lamela, Kane

Predicted PSV XI: Zoet; Dumfries, Schwaab, Viergever, Angelino; Rosario, Hendrix; Lozano, Pereiro, Bergwijn; De Jong

Squawka Prediction

Tottenham are in desperate need of the three points here and despite that draw in the Netherlands two weeks ago, they were the better of the two sides and we’re backing their class to shine through in a comfortable win here. 2-0.

1. Tottenham -1 @ 20/21 with BetBull

Tottenham are the stronger of these two sides and with something of a home advantage in this game, we can see their superior quality coming to the fore.

PSV have struggled away from home in the Champions League in the last couple of years and if the likes of Lucas Moura and Harry Kane are as dangerous in front of goal as they were at Wolves on Saturday, it could be a long night for the visitors’ backline.

We’re backing Spurs to ease through to the three points they so desperately need here by backing them with a one-goal handicap.

Key Stat: PSV have lost three of their last four Champions League away matches by more than one goal.

Tip: Tottenham to win with a one-goal handicap @ 20/21 with BetBull – bet here

2. Erik Lamela to score at any time @ 9/5 with BetBull

Erik Lamela’s Tottenham career has been a real rollercoaster, but the Argentinian is enjoying arguably his best form in a Spurs shirt so far this season.

The 26-year-old has struggled with consistency and fitness in the past but so far this season he has racked up six goals in 11 appearances in all competitions, including his side’s second in their 2-3 away win over Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend. He found the net in Tottenham’s other home Champions League game against Barcelona so far this season, and we fancy him to find the net again on Tuesday night.

Key Stat: Erik Lamela has scored six goals in 11 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

3. A goal to be scored between 76:00 and full time YES @ 5/7 with BetBull

Late goals have been a real feature of this Champions League group so far. Tottenham have conceded in the final five minutes of each of their three games so far in this group while PSV conceded three in the final fifteen minutes of their defeat to Barcelona.

As we expect Tottenham to be ahead comfortably in this fixture, it could be a case of PSV Eindhoven chasing a way back into the game in the closing stages and the pace of the hosts finishing off a chance on the break in the final minutes of the match.

Key Stat: A goal has been scored in the final five minutes of all three of Tottenham’s Champions League games so far this season.

Tip: Goal scored 76:00 to full time YES @ 5/7 with BetBull – bet here
