Arsenal manager Unai Emery has revealed he will not be looking to sign a new forward in January to make up for Danny Welbeck‘s injury.
Welbeck suffered a broken ankle during Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League on Thursday, having to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher in the first half.
The injury leaves Arsenal with just Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as first-team forwards for the foreseeable future.
But Emery has insisted he will be looking inwards to replace Welbeck for the time being, with one particular youngster catching his eye.
“The first [choice] is to look inside, and we have one striker also who is working well with the under-23s and is improving also, Eddie Nketiah, and he could have chances,” he said when asked whether he will be seeking attacking reinforcements, as reported by Goal.
“But I think it’s early for speaking about the possibility [of making signings] in January.”
Nketiah, 19, is yet to appear for the Arsenal first team this season but has made two appearances on the substitute bench in the Europa League.
The highly-rated forward made himself known to the wider public in the Carabao Cup last season, scoring twice in a 2-1 win for Arsenal over Norwich City having come on from the bench with the Gunners behind.
While no official confirmation has been made over the full extent of Welbeck’s injury and the length of his absence, first thoughts are that it is serious with some speculating that the Englishman could be out until the end of the season.
