Adrien Rabiot’s mother and agent, Veronique, has insisted his Paris Saint-Germain career is over after the player rejected the offer of a new contract.
Rabiot, 23, broke onto the scene with the Parisians in 2012 and has clocked up 219 appearances for the club to date, winning four Ligue 1 titles among a host of major honours.
Is Rabiot’s time at PSG up? Five things to know…
- Adrien Rabiot broke into the PSG first team in 2012, given his debut by then manager Carlo Ancelotti.
- The 23-year-old has won four Ligue 1 titles among a host of other major honours across his 219 appearances for the club.
- Rabiot initially rejected a new contract four years ago, before eventually agreeing on an extension.
- His situation has come full circle, with the player rejecting a new deal and ending talks with the club’s sporting director.
- Rabiot, of whom legendary midfielder Xavi is a fan, has been linked with Barcelona and Liverpool.
Amid strong links to a move to Barcelona and the Premier League, Rabiot has rejected PSG’s most recent contract offer and intends to leave the club on a free when his current deal runs out at the end of the season. It is a decision which Veronique Rabiot insists is ‘firm and definitive’.
“Adrien’s decision is firm and definitive,” she told RTL.
“As everybody knows, the situation has totally deteriorated, and it is no longer possible to go back.
“During the summer, I told Mr. Henrique [PSG’s sporting director] that I wanted Adrien transfer listed as he wanted to leave the club and that was clear. I see no disloyalty. The club did not want to sell Adrien — there was an offer from Barcelona during that transfer window and the club rejected it. They absolutely had the right to do that.
“Now, the situation becomes very, very complicated as Adrien can leave and the club does not want to lose him.”
Veronique went on to claim that there has been no agreement between Rabiot and Barcelona or any team yet, but she believes negotiations could begin as soon as the January transfer window opens.
She added: “There has been no agreement with any club at any time — I do not know who started this rumour. I think that some people enjoy believing it.
“I have always respected the rules and protocols — everybody knows that. I have never denigrated PSG and now I have been attacked by the club through Mr. Henrique, so I have allowed myself a response.
“We are not allowed to speak with any club until Jan 1 and I will not speak with any club until Jan. 1.”
Fifpro back Adrien Rabiot in PSG dispute
Rabiot’s refusal to sign a new contract at PSG has drawn the ire of the club’s fans, but the French international has received the backing of the global union of professional footballers (Fifpro).
The 23-year-old appears to have been indefinitely sidelined by PSG, with Fifapro recently saying Rabiot “has the right not to sign” a new deal.
Fifpro added: “Is football about winning matches or making profits? Jean-Marc Bosman fought for this right and Fifpro defend it.”
