RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner hints at a move to Bayern Munich ahead of the January transfer window.
Werner, 22, indicated to reporters that he wanted to remain in Germany amid rumours that clubs in the Premier League, including Liverpool, are interested in acquiring his services.
Why is there so much interest in Werner? Five things to know…
- Werner began his career with VFB Stuttgart.
- The Germany international only bagged 14 goals in 103 appearances for the club.
- Werner moved to Leipzig in 2016 after spending three seasons with Stuttgart.
- Werner has been a lot more prolific with Leipzig, scoring 55 goals in 96 appearances.
- The 22-year-old has scored 10 goals in 15 appearances and made two assists in the Bundesliga this season.
Werner did not manage to find the net for Leipzig when they played Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Wednesday. Bayern veteran Frank Ribery scored the game’s only goal in a dull midweek contest at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern’s victory increases the pressure on league leaders Borussia Dortmund, closing the gap to only six points and there’s now a five-point gap between them and fourth-placed Leipzig.
Following the game, the Germany international hinted that he wanted to ply his trade with the winning side in the near future.
“I’ve had a nice two and a half years at Leipzig, so they are in the picture [for next season],” he told Sky Sports Germany.
“There are other clubs in the picture. If you play in Germany and want to stay in Germany, there is only one club in question.”
Werner, has scored 13 goals in 19 games this season, and clubs around Europe will be chomping at the bit to secure the his signature. Leipzig are likely to sell if the 22-year-old forward doesn’t sign an extension on his contract, which expires at the end of the season.
Where is Werner most likely to go?
Werner indicated that playing for Bayern is at the top of his wish list, but other clubs are interested in the forward. According to Abendzeitung, Liverpool are a “serious competitor” in the race for Werner.
Even though the Reds have plenty of goals in their side, with last years Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah still firing on all cylinders this campaign, they still don’t have a reliable out-and-out striker.
The report claims that Liverpool have been pondering signing the forward and he’s been scouted at the behest of Klopp on several occasions.
Earlier this year Wener did express a desire to play in the Premier League, but with 13-time champions, Manchester United. “Yes, playing in the Premier League is a dream for me. I would like to play for two or three clubs, and Manchester United are one of those clubs,” he told FourFourTwo.
“But probably not in the next few years – later, when my English is a little bit better,” he added.
Bayern manager Niko Kovac did not hide his admiration for Werner before their game on Wednesday but stopped short of addressing the transfer rumours.
“Timo Werner is a great player with great skills,” Kovac told Kicker. “What happens in the winter or next summer, we’ll leave that alone.”
