"I think they will get him" - Man Utd tipped to upset their Premier League rivals

Former midfielder Jamie Redknapp predicts that Mauricio Pochettino will take over at Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho was let go by United after only 17 games in charge this season after he presided over United’s worst start to a league campaign in over two decades.

Could Mauricio Pochettino be the next Man Utd boss? Five things to know…

  • Mauricio Pochettino led Tottenham to their highest Premier League points total in the 2016/17 season (86).
  • He was linked with the Manchester United job in 2016 after dining with legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
  • The Argentinian signed a new deal with Tottenham earlier in 2018.
  • It is reported Pochettino would like to manage United but would cost the 20-time English champions £34m to release him from his Spurs contract.
  • Nonetheless, Jamie Redknapp, a former Spurs player, predicts he will replace caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Red Devils legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed as the club’s interim manager along with Sir Alex Ferguson’s former right-hand man Mike Phelan on Tuesday.

Solskjaer remaining in the dugout at the end of the season is contingent upon him achieving an extraordinary feat such as winning the Champions League or, at the very least, securing an unlikely top-four finish in the Premier League.

With the odds stacked against the Norwegian, speculation has been rife in the media over who will get the job at the end of the season.

One candidate who is favourite among pundits and commentators, alongside former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, is Spurs’ current boss, Pochettino. And Sky Sport pundit Redknapp says he thinks United will get him.

Redknapp believes that is when Pochettino’s services will be secured, with the former Spurs midfielder telling Sky Sports: “I think Manchester United will get him. I think they will go for it and I think they will get him.

“Of course [Spurs fans should be worried] because he’s the special one, he’s a great manager that everyone would want at their club.

“Tottenham have got to do everything in their power to keep him, it’s as simple as that. He’s a very talented manager, the players adore him and play for him and you can see why Manchester United would want him.”

Pochettino has taken Spurs to new heights during his time at the club and has guided his side to a third-place berth this campaign, with a five-point cushion protecting their top-four position. Redknapp acknowledges that leaving all of that behind for the prestige of Old Trafford would be devastating to Tottenham.

He added: “It is all there for him, moving into a new stadium, a great young side and if he was to move it would be a real shame for Tottenham.

“But I’m sure, knowing Daniel Levy, he will think ‘where is the next one, who is the next manager that could take this club forward?’

“He will know there are people out there. There are not many like Pochettino but I would say someone like Eddie Howe would be the perfect fit for Tottenham; he gives young players an opportunity.”

United won their first game under Solskjaer 5-1, beating Cardiff City on Saturday evening.

The daunting task of managing Man Utd

Any manager that takes over in the much-coveted dugout at Old Trafford will inevitably be compared to arguably club football’s greatest manager in history. Every other week that manager will stand on the touchline, the Sir Alex Ferguson stand looming over them as a constant reminder of their inadequacy.

David Moyes, Lous van Gaal and Jose Mourinho all attempted to dispel the spectre of Fergie’s glory days by attempting to impress their own methods on the club. All of which detracted from the club’s established philosophy.

United went from being a dynamic football side, famed for their fast-paced and entertaining play, to becoming a rigid outfit bereft of invention and encumbered by caution.

Solskjaer has promised a clean slate at the club, and the inclusion of Phelan suggests the Red Devils will revert back to their traditional modus operandi. This will make Solskjær’s life easier, especially with the fans whose collective voices are growing hoarse after incessant chants of “attack” this campaign.

If Solskjaer’s tenure is indeed temporary, whoever takes over the reins at United might have to resign themselves to the fact that the club conducts itself a certain way, and the pragmatic thing to do is work within that system rather than against it.

Pochettino, with his emphasis on developing young talent and use of exciting tactics could be the man to finally get United back on track.
