Lyon are no closer to agreeing a new contract with Nabil Fekir after the midfielder’s transfer to Liverpool broke down in the summer, according to club president Jean-Michel Aulas.
Fekir, who has made over 150 appearances for Lyon, will see his current contract expire at the end of next season and there is confusion as to whether he will sign a new deal.
What is Fekir’s current contract situation? Four things to know…
- Fekir scored 23 goals across all competitions last season and was subsequently linked with a move to Liverpool.
- The Frenchman looked all set to join the Reds but a deal collapsed at the last minute amid concerns over a long-term knee problem.
- Lyon ended up keeping hold of Fekir, but he will soon be between agents and club president Aulas wants his representation to be sorted before new contract talks begin.
- Fekir has scored four goals and provided four assists in all competitions this season but enters the final year of his contract next term.
According to GFFN, Aulus gave an update on Fekir at a Groupe OL meeting on Wednesday.
“For the moment, we have not really had a real discussion, even if we met three weeks ago,” Aulus said.
“The sorting out of various things concerning who the agent is, is ongoing. The aim is to have a clear and precise position from his point of view between now and the end of the year.
“Jean-Pierre Bernès is still his agent but he cannot be so at the end of the player’s contract.”
Jean-Pierre Bernès’ term as Fekir’s agent ends in April 2019, and given a reported frosty relationship between the pair, it is currently unclear whether he will renew his contract.
Will Liverpool go back in for Fekir?
Even after Fekir’s transfer to Liverpool collapsed, there were still suggestions the deal could be resurrected at a future date.
Jurgen Klopp still hasn’t directly replaced Philippe Coutinho since the Brazilian left for Barcelona back in January.
Fekir found the net against Manchester City in the Champions League earlier this season, emphasising his Premier League credentials.
But ongoing concerns about his fitness could put Klopp off going back in for the 25-year-old.
Liverpool face Bournemouth in the Premier League this weekend.
