Confirmed: Real Madrid issue full Leeds Utd transfer statement

Real Madrid have confirmed the sale of goalkeeper Kiko Casilla to Leeds United.

Casilla moved to Madrid from Espanyol in 2015 and made 43 appearances for the first team but has often found himself behind Keylor Navas and, now, Thibaut Courtois in the goalkeeping pecking order.

The 32-year-old has signed a deal at Elland Road that will run until the summer of 2023, with Real Madrid’s official statement reading: “Real Madrid CF and Leeds United FC have agreed on the transfer of player Kiko Casilla.

“The club wants to show its gratitude for its years of dedication and professionalism and for its exemplary behaviour from its formation in our quarry since 2000 until its trajectory with the first team.”

Casilla has been handed the number 33 jersey at Leeds United and will provide competition for the likes of Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Will Huffer between the sticks for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

A statement released by Leeds on their official website read: “Leeds United are delighted to announce the signing of Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

“The experienced 32-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year deal at Elland Road, running until the summer of 2023.

“Casilla becomes Marcelo Bielsa’s first signing of the January transfer window and has been handed the number 33 shirt.

“The addition will add competition amongst the goalkeeping ranks and he will now fight with Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Will Huffer for a starting berth at Elland Road.”

Casilla’s Premier League dream

Leeds United are currently top of the Championship table and are looking to end a 15-year wait to return to the Premier League.

And upon signing for the club, Casilla revealed his desire to put the club back in its ‘real place’.

He told LUTV: “Leeds United is a really historic club in England with a massive fan base that is perfect.

“My desire is to help put the club in its real place, in the Premier League.”

Leeds travel to Stoke City on Saturday in their next Championship game.
