Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez will be “desperate” to beat former club Arsenal this evening says former Gunners defender Martin Keown.
The Gunners host the Red Devils this evening in the FA Cup fourth round.
Can Sanchez condemn Arsenal? Here is what you need to know…
- Alexis Sanchez moved to Manchester United from Arsenal in January 2018 in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
- The Chilean international has found life at Old Trafford difficult since former United boss Jose Mourinho brought him to the club.
- He has made 32 appearances for United, scoring just four goals.
- Under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Sanchez hopes to improve upon his single goal in 11 Premier League matches this season.
- Former club Arsenal host Sanchez and United this evening at the Emirates.
Life for Sanchez hasn’t been easy – at least on the pitch – since his switch to Old Trafford, with his excellent form at Arsenal failing to transfer over with him to last season’s Premier League runners up.
However, former Gunners centre-back Keown believes that Sanchez would love nothing more than to get on over his former employers, with Solskjaer perhaps wise to give the playmaker an opportunity to showcase his ability in front of his former home.
Writing in his Daily Mail column, Keown wrote: “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been waiting for the perfect moment to re-introduce Alexis Sanchez.
“What better opportunity for the forward to relaunch his Manchester United career than by going back to his old club and knocking them out of the FA Cup?
“Not only will he be desperate to prove a point to the Arsenal fans, but Sanchez gets a real buzz from playing in this competition.
“He has scored in two FA Cup final victories with Arsenal and found the net in three semi-finals — including for United against Tottenham last season.”
Arsenal’s defence could struggle
Keown – a man who knows a thing or two about defending – discussed the threat that Unai Emery’s defence could be facing this evening from their former man.
Despite his poor tenure at United so far, Keown believes that the Arsenal defence may find it tough going up against the sheer pace of the Manchester United attack, including Alexis Sanchez, who could use the new found love of Solskjaer to his advantage.
“He could cause Arsenal serious problems down their left flank. Sead Kolasinac plays as more of a wing-back than a defender, often leaving gaping holes behind him. Those are the kind of spaces Sanchez will be looking to exploit to destroy Arsenal’s FA Cup dream.
“This is a player who needs the love of his manager.
“Solskjaer has been talking him up in recent weeks as if readying him for this huge clash at the Emirates.”
