Chelsea playmaker Willian is hoping fellow Blue and Brazil international David Luiz stays at the club for the foreseeable future.
Luiz has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge with his contract expiring at the end of the season.
Will David Luiz leave Chelsea? Four things to know…
- Luiz returned to Chelsea in August 2016 for his second spell at the club, signing for a reported fee of £34 million.
- This season, Luiz has started 19 of Chelsea’s 20 Premier League games.
- Sarri has stated publicly that he wanted a new deal for Luiz, whose current contract expires next summer.
- But Luiz the Brazilian centre-back is 31, and Chelsea have a policy of only offering one-year or two-year extensions to players of his age.
Chelsea teammate Willian has shared his opinion on whether Luiz should stay at the club. Speaking to reporters, the talented attacker revealed that he doesn’t want Luiz to go anywhere and to sign an extended deal with the former Premier League champions.
“For sure, of course. I want [him to stay],” said Willian.
“We have to see if they, the club, will want him. I think they want him. For me, I want him to stay.”
How important is Luiz at Chelsea?
Centre-back Luiz regained his place in the Chelsea starting eleven this season following the arrival of Sarri, who favours a possession-heavy playing style.
The Brazilian only made ten Premier League appearances for former Chelsea coach Antonio Conte last season before the Italian left the club after Chelsea’s FA Cup triumph in May.
This season has been a different story. The only league game this season in which he missed out on Sarri’s XI resulted in a shock 2-1 defeat to Wolves.
Luiz starred in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, scoring the Blues second and proving influential at the back through winning more headed duels (5) than any other player on the pitch.
