Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has said staying at Chelsea might be best thing for Eden Hazard amid ongoing speculation about his future.
Hazard’s current Chelsea deal expires in a year-and-a-half and the Belgian forward has given no clear indication he plans to renew it.
Should Eden Hazard stay at Chelsea? Five key things to know…
- Hazard has won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and the Europa League since signing for Chelsea in 2012.
- The contract he signed three-and-a-half years ago is reportedly worth £200,000 per week; only N’Golo Kante earns more at Chelsea.
- He has previously played under managers renowned for defensive coaching rather than attacking, such as Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho.
- In Maurizio Sarri, it is said Hazard finally has a coach who will allow him to express himself, something his Belgium teammate Vincent Kompany thinks has been a long time coming.
- However, Hazard has stated publicly he dreams of playing for Real Madrid.
Martinez, who led Belgium to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia last summer, believes a new project isn’t necessarily what Hazard needs at this stage of his career.
“Eden Hazard will never let you down,” Martinez told Belgian outlet HLN, according to Metro.
“He honestly cares about the people around him. I don’t know if a new challenge would be good for him. He knows how much they love him at Chelsea. And there’s chemistry between Sarri and him.
“Eden enjoys himself at Chelsea. He has reached an exceptional level at that club. Then it’s uncertain if a new project would be good for him. I’m convinced that he can reinvent himself at Chelsea. Look at him now – even as a ‘9’.”
Hazard’s one-man show at Chelsea

The absence of an out-and-out striker at Stamford Bridge has placed an extra burden on the Belgian’s narrow shoulders this term. As well as being Sarris’ principle creative force he’s had to grab the bulk of goals, too. His shoulders are far broader metaphorically than they’re physically, however, and the mercurial playmaker has been equal to the task so far in the Premier League.
Hazard has scored 10 goals and provided nine assists in 19 Premier League appearances so far this term. That is an outstanding feat, even for a player seemingly blessed with the agility and skill to gracefully weave past players at will. Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud are lacking the requisite led in their respective pencils to penetrate defences and score enough goals this campaign (six between them). Which has left the wiry Belgian to drive the Blues’ attacks while playing in between Pedro and Willian on the flanks.
Hazard will boss it wherever he plays. Put him on chimes with the Hallé symphony orchestra and he’ll probably knock it out of the park. But Chelsea need a striker if they hope to keep a rallying Manchester United side at bay.
