Solskjaer confirms he expects Mourinho’s favourite to stay at Man Utd this month

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted Man United are unlikely to make any signings during the January transfer window.

The Red Devils have won all six of their games since Solskjaer took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho, with the Norwegian enjoying the best start to a managerial reign in the club’s history.

Do Man United need any January signings? Five things to know…

  1. Jose Mourinho was sacked as Man United manager in December after the club’s worst league start in 29 years.
  2. Star players such as Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford struggled for consistency during Mourinho’s tenure.
  3. Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Mourinho, Man United have won all six of their games.
  4. Pogba has scored and assisted four times since then, with Rashford also bagging four goals.
  5. This turnaround in form seems to have Solskjaer satisfied with the squad at his disposal.

The likes of Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Victor Lindelof have undergone a transformation in form after struggling under the previous regime, and Solskjaer now appears happy with the squad he has to work with until the end of the season.

Asked if he expects United to make any signings in the current window, Solskjaer replied: “No, not really.”

The 45-year-old also addressed speculation surrounding the future of Scott McTominay, with the Scotland international being linked with a loan move to Celtic recently. McTominay had been a favourite under Mourinho, even winning the “Manager’s Player of the Season” award in May.

However, Solskjaer claimed the club are working on a new deal for the 22-year-old and that he was keen to keep McTominay around given Marouane Fellaini’s injury.

Asked about McTominay, Solskjaer said: “Scott is working hard. He is a young boy I believe in. We are working on his contract.

“You know with injuries, with Fellaini as well and the squad we have, I am not too sure we are going to see any movement at all.”

Solskjaer backs Mourinho to bounce back

Despite overseeing a remarkable turnaround in form at Old Trafford since replacing Mourinho, Solskjaer has backed the Portuguese to land another top job soon, insisting he is still a “fantastic manager”.

Mourinho recently told BeIN SPORTS he still “belongs to top-level football” and that he is too young to retire, and when asked about those comments, Solskjaer said: “Why shouldn’t he [be back in the game]?

“He’s a fantastic manager and with the results, he’s had I don’t think he will be struggling to find work.”
