Liverpool expected to finally replace Coutinho – even if they win the title

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool will finally bring in a replacement for Coutinho even if they win the Premier League this season.

The former Reds man thinks the German coach will look to strengthen his midfield even if they win the English top-flight.

Will Liverpool finally replace Coutinho? Four key things to know…

  1. Liverpool sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January 2018 after a protracted chase from the Spanish giants.
  2. Liverpool brought in Fabinho & Naby Keita in the summer despite neither being a player like Coutinho.
  3. The Reds tried to sign Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir during the summer but failed to seal a deal.
  4. Jamie Carragher thinks the club will sign a Coutinho replacement even if they win the Premier League this season.

The former Liverpool defender also pointed out that the problems with the Reds midfield go all the way back to when they allowed Coutinho to leave last January without signing a replacement.

“Yes, in terms of the make-up of the midfield,” he told Sky Sports when asked if Liverpool have a problem. “But it’s not just a problem now, I think that was even a problem if you go back to the end of last season. They lost Coutinho last January and they never replaced him.”

Liverpool had hoped to sign Lyon star Nabil Fekir in the summer but couldn’t get a deal over the line leaving Liverpool short of options, a point not lost on Carragher.

“They tried to replace him with someone from Lyon (Nabil Fekir) in the summer but they couldn’t get him, there wasn’t three or four different options.

“So it’s not just a case of right now, in the summer, even if Liverpool win the league, it is still a position I think they will try and fill because it’s not just a case of one player going in there and being the best player. They don’t even really have that type of player off the bench.”

Did Klopp fail to utilise the bench against Everton?

Liverpool were left frustrated by a disciplined Everton performance as the Reds were unable to make the breakthrough and grab all three points they needed to return to the top of the Premier League table.

The result leaves Klopp’s side one point behind Manchester City having both player 29 games.

With the Reds struggling to create enough clear-cut chances the German boss brought on Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Adam Lallana yet didn’t deviate from the 4-3-3 set-up that had failed to yield a break-through.

Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool’s manager should have been bolder and brought another creative player into the game.

“If you’re bringing Firmino on, play him as a No 10 and play two central midfield players so instead of having three midfield players that Everton’s midfielders can see in front of them, put one in behind them,” he told Sky Sports.

“Even when Adam Lallana came on, he didn’t come on as one of the midfield three, he came on as one of the front three. Now maybe Klopp thinks at that stage that it isn’t a bad point.

“Liverpool have only lost one game this season, I played in a season when we only lost two games and never won the league. It doesn’t matter how many games you lose, it’s points that you drop and these points at the moment are proving vital.”

Liverpool face Burnley at Anfield before a trip to Fulham while title rivals, Manchester City, face Watford at the Etihad before, what could be, a crucial Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
