Rummenigge eager to bring Schweinsteiger back to Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, has expressed a desire to bring Bastian Schweinsteiger back to the club once his playing career finishes.

Schweinsteiger made 500 appearances for Bayern before leaving in 2015, winning eight Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League.

Schweinsteiger to return to Bayern? Five key things to know…

  1. Schweinsteiger is an icon at Bayern, having played 500 times for the club.
  2. The 34-year-old helped the club to eight league titles and a Champions League during that time.
  3. He left in 2015, briefly joining Man Utd before heading to MLS side, Chicago Fire, in 2017.
  4. The ex-Germany international is contracted with Chicago until December this year.
  5. Bayern CEO, Rummenigge, has admitted he would like to see Schweinsteiger return to the club once he retires.

After a short stint with Manchester United, the 34-year-old has spent the past two seasons in MLS with Chicago Fire, where he remains today.

However, with the end of his playing career on the horizon, Rummenigge has hinted at a return to the Allianz Arena for Schweinsteiger, admitting he is still ‘in touch’ with the Germany international.

“FC Bayern is always interested in binding important former players to the club. For example, I would also like to have Bastian Schweinsteiger with us,” Rummenigge told Abendzeitung.

“But I don’t know whether he’ll ever come back to Munich.

“For me, it was one of the most emotional moments of last year when Basti took a lap of honour after his farewell game. I thought to myself: his conduct, which was always extremely serious, upright, and amiable, paid off.

“I’m in touch with Basti relatively often. We regularly text and also sometimes talk on the phone. I told him he should think over sometime whether that is an attractive option for him.”

“James is a world star” – Rummenigge speaks out on Rodriguez

One player with an uncertain future at Bayern is their Colombian star James Rodriguez.

The 27-year-old has been on loan at the Bavarian club from Real Madrid since the start of last season, scoring 12 goals and providing 20 assists in 60 appearances so far.

However, the player himself has given no clear indication as to whether he would like to remain at Bayern beyond his loan deal.

Rummenigge, though, is a big fan, regardless.

“I still out myself as a fan of James. He has an incredibly fantastic left foot and is a world star in my opinion,” he added.
