Arsenal’s change isn’t going to happen overnight, says Cech

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has warned fans the club will take some time to adapt to Unai Emery’s style of play.

The Gunners have won two of their opening four Premier League games of the season, beating West Ham United and Cardiff City after defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea.

During Arsenal’s matches, Cech has come under fire for his stuttering role in the system, having made two errors so far with his passing.

But the goalkeeper has come out to defend himself, highlighting the fact his two misplaced passes have come from 166 attempts.

“I had 166 passes in the first four games which is a huge amount and everybody picked up on only two,” Cech said (via the Evening Standard).

“It’s obviously not a great thing to do when you pass the ball in a dangerous area, like I did at Cardiff when I gave it to Harry Arter, but it’s part of the game that you can always make a mistake.

“If you look at the evolution of Barcelona and Man City, it didn’t happen overnight. As they got more familiar with that [style], the results came.

“We’re now in that process of getting to know what advantage it gives us.”

Cech’s place as number one goalkeeper had initially come into doubt during the summer following the arrival of Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen, but the German is yet to appear in a competitive game for the Gunners.

Arsenal and Cech will be looking to win their third game in a row on Saturday as they travel north to take on Newcastle United.

Cech’s passing stats this season

Despite the criticism he has received, Cech has been one of the busiest, and most successful, goalkeepers when it comes to passing this season.

No goalkeeper has played more passes than Cech in the Premier League, with the Arsenal man attempting 140 in his four games so far – slightly fewer than the 166 he reports.

Cech has also completed more passes than any other Premier League goalkeeper (100), with an accuracy of 71.43%.
