Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has revealed that Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos never issued an apology after the pair collided in last season’s Champions League final.
Karius, 25, started between the sticks for Liverpool in the Champions League final last May but two goalkeeping mistakes on his part ultimately cost the Merseyside club glory in Kiev.
The German received major backlash after the match, and his Liverpool career subsequently derailed, before he was sent out on loan to Besiktas last month on a temporary two-year deal.
After the 3-1 defeat at the NSC Olimpiyskiy, the former Mainz 05 shot-stopper underwent examinations at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and medics determined that he had sustained a concussion during the match after reportedly receiving an elbow to the head from Ramos.
Five minutes after the incident, Karius would make his first howler, gifting Karim Benzema the ball to open the deadlock, before squandering a long-range Gareth Bale effort in the second-half – Karius believes the collision with Ramos led to these errors.
Speaking to reporters (via Marca), he said: “Nobody will ever know the link between the blow I received and the mistakes I later made on the pitch. It’s not an excuse, just an explanation.
“I don’t know if Sergio Ramos deliberately injured me. Only he knows, but it’s not important.
“However, he has never said sorry to me. The tests that they did on me showed I had a visual impairment.
“In normal circumstances, it’s hard to imagine that I would make those mistakes.”
Having had his career in England tarnished by those two costly errors in the final, the Biberach an der Riss-born ‘keeper is now looking to rebuild his reputation in Turkey with Besiktas.
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp wasted no time over the summer looking for Karius’ replacement, recruiting Alisson for a then world-record fee for a goalkeeper of £67m, before Chelsea broke that landmark shortly after with the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Karius has started the last four matches for Besiktas as the club sit fourth in the Super Lig. The Black Eagles next face Kayserispor at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday, while Liverpool take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
