Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes James Milner is currently performing at the highest level of his career.
Milner, 32, has been heavily influential in the middle of the park this campaign as Jurgen Klopp’s men sit atop the Premier League table having made a perfect start to the season.
And despite Liverpool significantly strengthening their central midfield over the summer with the signings of Naby Keita and Fabinho, Milner has arguably been their best player.
The former England international has played every match for the Reds this season, including making five league starts for the club, as well as scoring against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
His form has prompted widespread adulation from fans, pundits and former players alike, with current Rangers manager Gerrard speaking in awe of his former England team-mate’s current performance levels.
“Milner is causing them selection problems. He’s in the form of his life,” he told BBC Radio 5 live.
“On current form he is the first name on the team sheet.”
Magic Milner
The versatile midfielder has been a vital cog in Klopp’s well-oiled machine since the German took the reigns at Anfield, especially last season as the club reached the Champions League final.
Milner has carried that form over to this season, making the second-most passes of any Liverpool player in the league (407), creating the third-most chances (10), registering the joint-most assists (two) and already scoring two goals across all competitions.

But it is not just Milner’s attacking attributes that make him so invaluable to Klopp and his team-mates. Defensively, Milner is also well-calibrated, with his industrious running and excellent fitness.
The former Man City man has already won the second-most tackles in the league of any Liverpool player (14), made the second-most interceptions (eight), drawn the third-most fouls (eight) and, he has also blocked the second-most shots (two).
Next up for Liverpool is a top-of-the-table clash against Chelsea on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
