Ex-Man City teen Jadon Sancho is currently Europe’s top assist-maker – and he’s yet to even start a game

Former Manchester City youth product turned Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho has registered the most assists of any player across the continent this season, and he is yet to start a match.

Jadon Sancho, 18, joined the Ruhr district giants in 2017 after becoming disillusioned with the opportunities of playing time at the Etihad under Pep Guardiola.

Since making his move, the talented tyro has gradually forced his way into the first-team action at the Westfalenstadion, starting a number of matches towards the backend of last campaign under then-manager Peter Stoger.

Many were expecting him to push on a claim a starting berth under newly-appointed Lucien Favre this season, but the former Nice coach is yet to start the Englishman, instead preferring to utilise another youngster in Jacob Bruun Larsen to hold down a first-team place on the wing.

Despite this, Jadon Sancho has taken the fleeting chances that have come his way this season, making an immediate impact on Dortmund’s style of play when entering the pitch.

The fledgeling forward has made six substituted appearances in the Bundesliga this season, and remarkably, he sits atop the assist-making chart across Europe, registering five, including the two he created during Saturday’s incredible 4-2 comeback against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Favre’s men were staring down the barrel at half-time with his side two down, but after the restart, Dortmund pulled a goal back, though, it would be the introduction of Sancho shortly after that truly flipped the game on its head.

Within the first minute of his entry to the BayArena, Jadon Sancho had created a sumptuous assist for Marco Reus, countering with devastating pace from the edge of his own box before skipping past two Leverkusen players and then finally laying it on a plate for the Germany international.

From there, Dortmund seemed to have an injection of fresh impetus and the growing frustrations of a dogged Leverkusen display were steadily alleviated, with Jadon Sancho duly collecting another assist in the dying embers.

On top of his five assists this term, the teenage talent has also netted one goal, coming during the club’s 7-0 demolition of Nurnberg during the past week, and he also became the youngest English player to make his Champions League debut for a foreign club in the competition’s history when he started against Club Brugge.

Should Jadon Sancho continue in this rich vein of form, then Favre will have no choice but to start trusting his youngster from the opening minute, and who knows, maybe an England call-up is not too far away for this extremely promising individual.
